How to fix Usenet access?
 

google did it again!
I was very happy with google acces to Usent, except for some quirks, for which I had 'workarounds' Now, google has done something to 'improve' exept for me!

I go to groups, all are listed. highlight a specific group, like this one. everything comes in, EXCEPT for the most important part, the list of postings! Shows all is in and done, so there is no more activity. Refresh, and keep getting the same screen - blank where the list of postings should be

Using Opera 9.64 on Win98 [and very happy except for this tiny disadvantage, so don't tell me to change to Some other browser.]

Since I can't read a single posting on ANY Usenet group, I now rely upon Eternal September, which is more and more attractive for its simplicity. However, I can't post through Eternal September. Perhaps, I don't have everything set up properly. But, in defense, ES asked for stuff I have no idea what they want or where to find to allow me to post through them.

So,
Anybody know a way to fix the google access? Or,
what EXACTLY am I supposed to put into ES to be able to post through them?

[PS I can read responses to this question, but won't be able to answer for awhile]

Explain again why you don't (didn't) access usenet through a normal (and
free) server?

You should not be using a browser (any browser) to experience usenet.

Why didn't you choose AIOE?

No registration (user-name/password garbage).

However, I can't post through Eternal September.

What are you using (what software) to connect to Maternal September?

What-ever it is, change your server setting to nntp.aioe.org.

Wow! That's amazing. I had that problem ever since Google did
their last major upgrade of groups perhaps a year ago. Running
Firefox 3.6 and 2 I found that whenever I went to a Usenet
group a yellow box would pop down from under the search bar
telling me I was using an unsupported browser and recommending
I upgrade to (surprise, surprise) Google Chrome. Then it would
just sit there with the "Loading..." box, nothing ever
appearing where the topic list should be. It offered for me to
switch to the old version, but when I selected this option it
would just sit at another "Loading..." box.

I only ever used Groups for looking through old posts anyway
(although that has been extremely useful for that in the
past), so I decided I'd just have to stick to posts I archived
myself with my Newsreader.

Later on a user in another Newsgroup posted a link to
narkive.com, which has replaced Groups for me despite its lack
of an extensive back archive and (in my opinion) a rather
clunky interface. If you want to use it to look up a specific
Newsgroup (a surprisingly hard thing to do from the homepage,
as far as I can see), simply type the location of the group
before "narkive.com". eg.
http://microsoft.public.win98.gen-di...n.narkive.com/
Notice that the Underscore is replaced with a Hyphen.

Anyhow, the cause of my initial exclamation was that, for one
thing I am surprised that an old Opera version running on 98
has worked where old Firefox failed. But mainly, it was a
reaction to me just trying to get onto Groups with Firefox
3.6, and it working! I can browse topics, read posts,
everything I should be able to do. The compatibility message
is gone too.

So somehow Google switched compatibility away from you and
towards me. Strange.

It might be worth waiting to see if any more changes happen
that might bring back your Opera compatibility, but I'd
suggest strongly that you start using a proper Usenet server
anyway. If for some reason though you still want to live in
the Web and Google has deserted you, I think Narkive allows
posting by members.

Point your browser at www.eternal-september.org and click "User
registration" in the menu on the left. When you register, they will
send you a password to go with the userid that you create. Then you
put those into your newsreader along with their Usenet server address,
news.eternal-september.org, and you can read and post.

Yes, and this Internet Explorer running on a !@#$#@!@ WinXP pro, JUST to be able to respond...
Went to eternal september, logged in, changed password, so still registered.. Then went to Opera settings and in two places changed the password to match, specifically important was the 'outgoing'

Yet, I get an error message whenever I try to reply. Error message in the Opera window for Mail and Chatting that says something failed.

I tried responding to two different postings today and I got an error message in that window to match each. However, oddly, I kept getting a recurring error message of not being able to reach someone named toylet.toylet @ gmail . com
That could have been left over, but did not recognize it.

However, I'm back to Opera not being able to send to the Usenet group through eternal september.

yes, again, google access WAS handy, fast and very intuitive. but now...takes days to update a screen *if* it ever decides to update. Eternal-September was installed years ago, but never used, more of a nuisance. However, when google failed to show any postings; I went back to the list provided by ES to scan down through, reading as needed. Answering? have to go to the WinXP Pro [spit, spit, curse begone!] and use it temporarily. which I'mm now using along with google access through MS IE, which yields these wonderful quote groupings.

Anyway, will try out that .org, if works, I'm done ...I'll post a reply to let you know.

Just tired of having my time taken up for whizbang, when I don't want whizbang, I just want to read the postings. ..and quickly reply when desired.

Opera is a web browser, not a Usenet client. Check out Thunderbird
(www.mozilla.org/thunderbird) or Agent (www.forteinc.com/agent) or
google for a newsreader.

Opera has an Email client as well as a web browser.

There are plenty of freeware Newsreaders that aren't just
Email clients that can understand NNTP. I use Xnews and Tin
(on Linux), but here is a good page for links to others:
