Sanyo HDD diagnostic

Older Thinkpad with a Sanyo CRD-S372B HDD, running vanilla 98.

Since Sanyo doesn't seem to be in the HDD business any more, I'm
wondering where I would go to find a diagnosic utility to assess the
health of this HDD.

Did another mfgr pick up the support for the Sanyo HDD's? Will another
mfgr's diagnostic utility work? Is there a generic test utility?

Just point me.

Thanks.

Google comes up with about 148 hits for "Sanyo CRD-S372B HDD". Just clicking one/two, I THINK that is a CD-ROM-- not an HDD. To find out what your HDD is...

You should run the diagnostics for the brand of hard drive that is in
the computer.

If you don't know what brand the drive is, you can download the
limited-use free edition of OnTrack Data Advisor from this location:
http://www.ontrack.com/freesoftware/#dataadvisor

When you click the download link on that page for Data Advisor 5.0 Free
edition, you will be taken to a page to register with the OnTrack site,
then you will be able to download the diskette creator file.

The downloads are diskette creators. They are to be run once from a
working Windows system and will guide you through the process of
extracting the Data Advisor onto a 3.5" floppy disk.

As far as I know, Maxtor's diagnostics will also work with any brand of drive, and
the older versions of Seagate Seatools also, but I am not sure about the new
version.

Thank you Glen. I got the Sanyo drive info via the 98 Sys Info screen.
Thought it was the HDD, duh, sorry.

I did Google Sanyo and that's when I discovered they did not deal in PC
components any longer, so, I asked you guys.

Will try OnTrackDataAdvisor to find out what this HDD really is. Being
it's a ThinkPad, probably a Hitachi.

Thanks again, I always learn something new when I read your posts.

In rechecking the Sys Info file, I find that the HDD is referred to as
a 'Generic IDE Disk Type02'. No mfgr stated.

I didn't associate that with the HDD the first time through. But now I
see that the drive letters associated with it, C D, confirms that it is
the HDD.

If I had read the Sanyo description thoroughly, the first time, I would
have known it was the CDROM.

Will try the Maxtor and Seagate utilities if the OnTrack one doesn't
work.

Once again, sorry and thanks.
