WinMe conflict w/ Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

Hi everyone,

I have a very old issue. Since I installed WinMe on an IBM
ThinkPad 770 [9548-30U], Device Manager showed:
! Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

Properties say:
This device is causing a resource conflict (Code 15)
To solve the conflict, click "Hardware Troubleshooter"
(Unfortunately it does NOT work).

Details of the conflicts a

It seems that this do not cause big problems because I can
work with the laptop, but I would like to solve the
problem.

Does anybody know how to fix this issue?

Best wishes
Fernando

It's always risky doing OS upgrades on laptops, unless the upgrade is
supplied from the manufacturer of the machine - was yours?

That machine is very much minimum spec for ME anyhow - unless you've
installed more RAM (4.0GB, 233MHz Pentium processor,32MB, 13.3 TFT 1024x768,
Windows 95)

My advice would be to reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager there,
Remove ALL instances of duplicated devices - including both the Intel and
Std IDE controllers
Remove ALL 'Other Devices' - if present
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall required drivers (and
probably want to reboot again), hopefully solving your problem.

Good Luck

Hi Noel,
Thank you for your time. As you can guess, the upgrade is
original from Microsoft, not from IBM; and yes, you are
right, the laptop is very much minimum for Me, although
with a "128MB SO DIMM SDRAM Memory" plus the original
32MB, it works good enough to do basic things (Office,
Internet Explorer, HotSync with Palm, Scanning and
Printing. Obviously no games).

Reviewing some white papers and upgrades I found a file to
fix a similar problem with Win98. Some details a

Filename: w98sfdi [v1.04]

Readme.txt:
IBM ThinkPad; January 28, 2000
Windows 98/98SE Supplement Diskette
Version 1.04
This diskette provides registry patches, etc., etc.,
(Fix)Registry Patches for installing Windows 98.

These registry patches include the following:
(Fix-1)Fix for enumerating Intel 82371AB(PIIX4) correctly.
This registry patch fixes an error in Device Manager
after installing Windows 98 in APM mode. PIIX4 is
enumerated by both PnP BIOS and Windows 98.

Installation Guide:
1-1. Boot the system.
1-2. Insert the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette into
diskette drive.
1-3. Click Start, then click Run. This will open the "Run"
window.
1-4. Type "A:\PIXX4\APM2APM\APM2APM.reg" and click the OK
button. This display the following window:
Registry Editor - Are you sure you want to add the
information
A:\PIXX4\apm2apm\apm2apm.reg to the registry ?
1-5. Click the Yes button. A successful window message is
displayed.
1-6. Click the OK button.

There is a Note:
For Windows 95 OSR2 users, do the following steps BEFORE
upgrading to Windows 98/98SE. Once the patch is installed,
start the Windows 98/98SE upgrade process.

Questions:
Are Win98 and WinMe very different in this regards?

Could this patch work for WinMe, even if WinMe is already
installed?

I did not find any similar patch for WinMe. Do you know
any? or Do you think the workaround you tell me MUST work?

Regards
Fernando
