ip address in 98

How do i find the ip addreess in Win 98? If i am behind a wireless
firewall...(DLink 524) will the computers ip addresses change after it is
shut down and rebooted? I want to allow access to my home network without
using a range of ip addresses.
Should the ip addresses for the seperate computers go into the router, or
the indivdual computers firewalls?...thanks for the help...tom

Winipcfg from Start run will give you the ip address.

I would set it up per the instructions that came with the router (or use the
wizard). This means the router interfaces with the external network.
The internal netwrok would have a range

Click Start Run, type in: winipcfg and press Enter

If you shut down (power off) a router, all the machines will be
reassigned new IP's in the order the machines are booted after the router
is powered back up.

I want to allow access to my home network without
using a range of ip addresses.

If you do not use a range then each machines IP that you want to allow
access, must be entered separately into the Trusted Zone of the firewall
used on the machine.

Should the ip addresses for the seperate computers go into the router, or
the indivdual computers firewalls?

The friewall on each individual machine.

What is the safest way to allow my computers to see each other? The way it
is now i have a range of ip addresses in each firewall trusted area.
Is that the best wqay or should i put ip adresses in the firewall ? Would my
computers not change ip addresses after a reboot...thanks tom

You're best off using the range if you have no backup power supply and
power issues are frequent. Any time the modem and router lose power they
will resync once power is restored. Powering off a router sets it back to
Default settings and new IP's will be reassigned to each machine in the
order they are booted.

If withing the trusted range you don't want one or two of the IP's to
have access, split the range and place the unwanted IP/s in the Untrusted
zone. If this means too many ranges just use single IP's. Only place the
machines IP address that you want to allow access, into the machines
firewall TZ that they will have access to. If you do not want a specific
machine (1) to have access to a specific machine (2), then do not add
specific (1) to the TZ of specific (2), add it to the untrusted or simply
omit it from TZ of specific (2). If you choose to add it to the untrusted
and if the IP's change at any time, you will have to change specific (1) in
the UTZ to it's new assigned IP.

Rebooting a machine does not cause the router to reassign an IP, power
loss/restore to the modem/router do.

Typically, your machine will use the same ip each time. If a computer was
off line for a long time it may not. A reboot would not change the IP
address

Whether you use a range or single IP's, wired or wireless, a network is
only as secure as one makes and maintains it. Keep all AV and Firewalls
fully up to date and if you ever suspect compromise, isolate the machines
from the net and investigate.

Since this is a gen98 newsgroup you should be asking your questions in a
more appropriate ng where you can get specific help.
