Windows ME updates off-line?
Hello
I have a PC running Win ME that is not connected to the internet or a network. I downloaded Windows Media Player 9 (full version) on my PC at work and saved the file to a flash disk. When I run the file on my PC at home it comes up with the following error: "The setup wizard has found one or more problems that could affect your installation. If you continue setup, you will not be able to use System Restore to rollback changes. Use Windows Update to obtain fix Q290700 and re-run Media Player set-up." The problem is, my PC at home is not connected to the internet, so how can I do a Windows Update. Can I download updates on one PC and run them on another? Cheers Ian |

Can I download updates on one PC and run them on another?
Yes, just in the way you are installing WMP9 having downloaded it to your work PC. The easiest way to save updates is to use the Windows Update Catalogue. This can be done from any PC which need not be running Win Me. Select Windows Millennium as the operating system and download and save the required updates. To access the Windows Update Catalogue you will need to visit the WindowsUpdate (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) site and choose in the left hand pane to "Personalize Windows Update" and then check the box in the right hand pane to "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalogue". Save Settings and now click the new link to the Catalogue that has been added to the left hand pane. MS KB 323166 - "HOW TO: Download Windows Updates and Drivers from the Windows Update Catalog" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=323166). BTW without the 290700 patch your system is creating unusable system restore checkpoints. Alternatively could ask Microsoft to send you a copy of the free Security Update CD which includes 290700 and all security patches to November 2003.
