xp instal file from ie7 in w98

On a Toshiba laptop (which only runs w98) I tried to istall IE7. It
didn't bother telling me it couldn't. It installed some sort of xp installer,
which I later removed, then choked, without installing IE7. But the whole
experience has slowed down this poor machine badly, although in some respects
it is slowly recovering. I'm figuring I need to reinstall IE6 to fix it?
(Install Firefox, uninstall IE6, reinstall IE6.)

DOS command SCANREG /RESTORE may be helpful.
This allows you to reboot with a known good Registry
as of some prior date with no guarantee: (there is
always the risk system files may have been overwritten
by incompatible files of the same date.) But it might
help restore system speed.
