Direct X 9, can it damage Win98

Hi,
(just noticed some ppl here are from Win98 group, maybe I should have
posted this over there.)

I have a fully functional Win98SE with many many programs loaded along
with many utilities.
I have heard its very risky installing Direct X above the one which comes
vanilla with 98; mine only has DX6. I have DX9 available to me via
a download and save from Microsoft, of which I did should I ever need
to do a clean instal.(apparently its okay to instal it at an early instal
stage.)
Today, I downloaded JAD6 (JetAudio) as my WinMediaPlayer acts up
every now and then by refusing to play sound.
Problem is, JAD requires DX9 and I am wary about installing it due to
many posts I've seen in the Win98General newsgroup where people have
said it crashed their system to the extent of having to re-instal.
I dont see why Microsoft doesnt give warnings about this........ oh well.
Anyway, is it at all possible to load it onto my machine without errors
or conflict?
Thanks
Gekko

I have been running DX 9.0C on my 98SE PC for some considerable time and it
is OK. I did have some minor problems but that was due to registry
corruption due bad sector on the hard drive. I haven't seen the Newsgroup
posts but it is certainly not crashing my system. (If you do load it, don't
forget to check for any security updates etc)

Although I have no problems with DX9 on a few pc's in house, it sounds like
you don't play games to speak of which more or less is the primary reason
for upgrading DX. On all pc's in house here (8 all told, mix of 98SE, 2000 &
XP) I use an early version of WinAmp for all music it'll "accept" (almost
solely mp3's, converted if neccessary) and let "whatever" fight over any
other media types.
