CTMOUSE in Win98 DOS window (or full screen)?

Is there a way to run a program in a DOS window under Win98 and have
the CTMouse (CuteMouse) driver installed? CTMouse 2.0 supports the
wheel in DOS mode. When I try to load it in a DOS window, it says
"device not found". I have a PS/2 Logitech mouse. The driver loads and
works in DOS boot mode.

OR is there any other way to get wheel support in a DOS program running
in a window or full screen over windows?

Thanks,

Harvey

If you otherwise have a usable mouse under DOS using CTMOUSE drivers, but
only the scroll wheel doesn't work, I can't see that there would be any
solution. If the mouse won't work at all under DOS with the CTMOUSE drivers,
then you should check BIOS settings to make sure that PS/2 support is
enabled.

The CTMOUSE driver is there and works if I boot in DOS mode, no
problem.
But if I am in Windows and a DOS Window (or full screen) the requested
CTMOUSE driver is either not loaded or superceeded by some other
driver. Any way to get the mouse driver I want in a DOS window? If I
can get a DOS compatible driver loaded (in a DOS window) that supports
the wheel, then I can make the appropriate calls in my program.

I think this message may be due to the fact that the PS2 port is
"owned" by the Windows mouse driver.

Have you tried loading the DOS CTMouse driver from your config.sys or
autoexec.bat before Windows starts?

Thanks,

Harvey

What Franc says. Else Restart in MS-DOS Mode to run your program.

Yes, and also on the .BAT properties for the DOS window and other
places, to no avail.

Is it as simple as "no DOS (real mode) driver can run in DOS over
windows"
would that be true?

Thanks,

AFAIK, yes, that's the case. Sorry, I didn't understand before that your
purpose was to use the CTMOUSE driver in a DOS window, as opposed to in
real-mode DOS. AFAIK, it's generally true that you can't load real-mode
drivers under Windows. I'm not *certain* that it's *always* the case, but
it's generally the case.

I was hoping that loading a DOS driver in autoexec.bat would force the
mouse to run in some kind of "MSDOS compatibility mode", as is the
case with some storage devices when their protected mode drivers
aren't configured correctly. But that's just a WAG ...

My intuitive take is that only if the PM drivers don't load for some reason
do any RM drivers that have been loaded stay in action. But, then, I do
recall people occasionally having issues when trying to start Windows from
"true DOS" mode using the WIN command in Win95/98, probably from RM/PM
conflicts, so it's not likely always a clean process. In short (my brain is
befuddled this evening), my understanding is that when Windows 95/98 loads
normally, it bypasses loading most, if not all, RM drivers, unless specified
by autoexec.bat and/or config.sys. And any subsequent loading of PM drivers
trumps any RM drivers that have been previously loaded -- with luck.

And how can i load the CD-Driver in Safe-Mode? If you "can't" load any
real-mode drivers?
