Getting 1440*900 screen resolution to work

Hi All,

I am having a problem getting Win98 to work with my new monitor. It's
an LCD widescreen with a resolution of 1440*900.

My old Kyro-II video card didn't have this resolution, so I went and
bought a new nvidia FX5200 card, but it also doesn't display this
resolution in it's list of options.

People suggest I upgrade to WinXP, but I don't really want the hassles
of upgrading at the moment.

Can Win98 use this resolution, or am I stuck with upgrading to XP?

Windows 98 can display any resolution your monitor and video card can.

Must be doing something wrong then :(

I've loaded the monitor drivers (the site did say they were for XP,
and I can't find any for Win98) but the resolution doesn't appear.
Usually once the monitor driver is loaded, the required resolution
appears.

The monitor in question is the Acer AL1916W.

Any suggestions?

I'd check to be sure your video card supports that resolution. The 5200 is
an older video card.

I was thinking along the same lines, but I have 2 confirmed reports
that the FX5200 displays at 1440*900 under WinXP, which tells me this
is a software problem somewhere.

Did you update the drivers for the card from the nVidia Site?

Hurrah!

After downloading the program powerstrip, it's finally working.

Nice to know you can still get Win98 to do what you need it to do.
Saved him buying XP as well, although he'll probably upgrade in the
near future anyway.

yeah. That was the first thing I did. As I just posted, not sure why,
but powerstrip did the job nicely.
