iosubsys problem
 

I have a dual boot system with WinMe on 1 drive and XP on another. When
starting WinMe today, I got a bluescreen with the following msg:

While initializing device IOS
Error:An I/O subsytem driver failed to load. Either a file in the
..\iosubsys subdirectory is corrupt or the system is low on memory.
System halted.

It appears that my USB ports are not coming up and unfortunately, about 2
wks ago I replaced my ps2 mouse with an MS optical USB mouse. I can boot in
safe mode but can't do much without a mouse.
I booted in logged mode and the last few lines of bootlog.txt a

or could that just open up a new can of worms?
All of my most used programs are on the WinMe side, so I'm really up a
creek. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I can boot in safe mode but can't do much without a mouse.

Enable Legacy USB support in the BIOS. This should then allow you to use
your mouse when in Safe Mode.

Try booting to Safe Mode and run System Restore to a checkpoint created
before your problems began.

Your problem could be due to your attempting to limit memory usage.

Hi Mike;
1) I went thru the bios and all its' submenus and there isn't an "enable
legacy usb" option. Would "usb emulation on/off" be the option I want.
2) When you suggest that the problem is caused by attempting to limit
memory usage, do you mean by using 1 of the so-called "ram-booster"
utilities? I tried 1 months ago but could see no benefit so I uninstalled
it. Could it have left garbage in the registry to come back and bite me?

it would be useful to see a copy of your system.ini file....this is where
most RAM-tweakers tend to cock things up totally

Why are you limiting vCache? - how much RAM is installed?
You have a high minimum filesize for the swapfile - why?

On my C drive (with Me installed) I've got 12.5 gig free, on my D drive
(with XP installed) I have 23.9 gig free, on my E drive (just data files)
5.17 gig free, and my F drive (data files again) I have 32.1 gig free.
I've never had a Canon printer or scanner, just a Lexmark printer.
Sorry, I honestly can't answer your questions about the swapfile and
vcache. I don't recall ever changing them, but then, I'm a geezer and have
trouble remembering yesterday :-)

Hence you limiting vcache. I can't see anything wrong with your
system/ini file. My comment was solely based on a reference I found where
a similar error message to the one you are seeing was displayed.

I'll bet your off watching the Allstar Game :-)

It's coming out by the roots later - again! It reminded me of all the
