the " and @ on my keyboard have switched, and the pound
sign has been replaced by # and the # has changed to \.
what's going on can you help?

Check your keyboard layout in the Control Panel. It would appear that are
in the UK and probably now have a US keyboard layout,

To correct this. Control Panel | Keyboard Language. Check that the
correct language is selected (probably English (British)). Then click the
Properties button and check that the Keyboard layout is British. If not,
using the drop down arrow to the right of the window change the layout to
that which matches your keyboard.
