What process happens?

Can somebody please explain me what processes exactly happen from when I
dbl-click on "My Documents" up to the time it appears?
(I want to see if I can make this process faste. I want "My documents" to
appears just as soon as II d-click on it.)

Thanks

I think you know that when we clk on sth a clk event happents and some
events start happening with the clk. (It's up to the programmer). I wanted
to know the exact things which happen after my click. I don't think it's
immediate.

The number of folders in "My Docs" is exactly 57. I tried clicking on the
folder right now. On my first clk it was opened so late, but I closed it and
tried again. In my next tries it came much faster. I don't have any idea
about the reason.

Thanks
Javad

There is one who experimented carefully with "debug" apps who said it is
ONLY the number of folders that matter, owing to convolutions &
iterations. Also, it won't apply to everyone/machine. So...

For sluggishness in navigating folders: Open Explorer, R-Clk My
Documents in the left pane, & select Properties. How many folders
does it contain? If it is around 100, try moving them out. Reboot. Is
your sluggishness gone? If not, put them back.

Here is something else...

If disabling your virus checker's auto-"System" scan, using it's
Tray button, leaving the other types on, gives immediate & dramatic
relief, I have further info. This supposedly applies to Scan Engine
4.1.60.

Dear PCR
I think I found the answer. The process must be something like this:
1- Dbl-Clk event
2- Mouse pointer changes
3- A "form" is loaded into memory. ("Form" is the special page (window) which is supposed to appear)
4- "Menu Bar" is loaded into memory. (RAM)
5- "Tool Bar" is loaded into memory.
6- "Status Bar" is loaded into memory.
7- "Web Contents" column is loaded into memory.
8- The "Form" appears with "Menu Br" & "Status Br" & "Web Contents column".
9- System asks for a list of related files and folders (Not subfolders). (I think asks it from registry)
10- The list of files and folders appear.

The most time consuming steps are 3&4&5&6&7, but step 3&4&5&6 (I think) are only done the first time I want to open a window. On next tries, these steps are ignored. So the problem occurs only on first try. Two other reasons may also cause the problem. First: The list of file and folders (Not subfolders) is too large. Second: Another program is occupying CPU and RAM.

There are several solutions for this:
1- Turn off "Tool Bar", "Status Bar" and "Web Contents".
2- Not to let the list get too large.
3- Exit other programs before clicking on "My Documents"
4- Use a faster CPU and a higher RAM.

Finally, I think that the best choice is not to do anything and let the problem occure on first open. On next tries it won't take place.

Which is so weird. I've got 3800 files and 200 subdirectories and about
0.5 GB in My Documents - so go figure! Anyway, apparently some people
have a problem with this.

I was going to mention you specifically, Colorado. I have 10 folders,
656 files, only. I did test the thing briefly once by COPYing all of
Program Files into it. Doing that COPY was a horror of a different
color, & I cannot recommend it. After a reboot, THAT particular horror
is over/done with.

Now I had 328 folders & 4836 files in My Documents. I didn't initially
notice much, if any, problem in navigating folders. Could be it got
worse after continuous navigation. I really wanted to delete them, after
the shock of the COPY, & perhaps did not give it a full test.

ANYWAY, many have reported relief by moving excess folder out of My
Documents. So, it is a worthwhile suggestion-- uhhhhh, presuming they
don't have to MOVE a veritable ton of stuff out. THAT could lead to a
truly horrid experience! Well, once started, give it it's inordinate
amount of time to complete-- one hour or more! The machine may appear to
be dead! (Actually, everything not Explorer related continues to run
well, IF you can get out of the Explorer window to see it.) Reboot, &
all will be well. The COPY will have been done.

57 isn't enough to do it. If it only happens on the first click (I
occasionally/always see that myself), likely a buffer is being filled.
Could be the file/folder names are going into Vcache. Likely, this will
not cure you...

"Control Panel, System, Performance tab, File System button, Typical
Role".

"Windows 98 Secrets" (Livingston/Straub), p. 1039, says it governs how
fast Windows 98 may display file names & folders...

"If you choose Network Server, Vcache caches 64 directory paths and 2729
filenames in memory. If you choose Desktop Computer, it caches 32 paths
and 677 files. The Desktop Computer setting uses 10K of memory as cache
and the Network Server setting uses 40K. You can most likely spare the
additional 30K to speed up access to your files and folders."

I agree, let it be. It must be much as you say, overhead in doing a
thing for the first time. I suppose a 3rd party app, such as an octopusy
virus scanner or a BHO, can contribute as well.
