win98se hangs on startp-up error

i have an error as in the subject line. it reboots itself and runs scandisk saying i did not shut down windows correctly, though no input from me. any ideas whats causing this & more importantly a fix. thanks -s win98se, 320mb ram (if that makes any difference?) --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
