No sound unless started in Safe mode (WinME)
 

Running Win ME, Creative Labs SB Live! 5.1

I just put this sound card in, and there's no sound. I called Creative about
10 times, finally found it's loaded and installed correctly. We determined
together that it's probably a problem with my system.ini file, because when
I load the PC in safe mode the sound works. When I say safe mode, what I do
is go into msconfig, choose Selective Startup, and deselect all the options
underneath Selective Startup. When I restart under this mode, the sound is
loud and clear.

Can anyone help me?

Sounds like your Sound Card driver is no longer being properly recognised,
is incorrectly set-up, or is corrupted. You need to re-install your Creative
software.

Boot into Safe Mode and if necessary, uninstall your Creative software in
Control Panel \ Add/Remove Programs. Then in Device Manager, 'Remove'
any/all "Sound, video and game controllers", shut down and re-boot.

WinMe *should* re-detect (Plug&Play) your Creative sound card and then ask
you for the Creative CD to install the 'correct' drivers.

BTW - when you say "I just put this sound card in", was that to replace an
existing 'on-board' sound device? If so, did you remember to uninstall it
and disable it in the BIOS??

I don't think it was on-board, it was in a PCI slot. Do I still need to
disable it in BIOS?

If it was a PCI card then you don't have to disable it in the BIOS. That
only applies to an 'on-board' device.

However, the fact that you replaced an existing PCI card means that the
original drivers were probably still lurking on your hard disk, or more
importantly their presence being recorded in the Registry - hence my
previous advice:-

"Boot into Safe Mode and ..... in Device Manager, 'Remove' any/ALL "Sound,
video and game controllers", shut down and re-boot."

I have deleted all Sound Video and Game controllers. Twice, maybe even three
times.

Can anyone offer any help with regards to the system.ini file?

OK, let's go back a few steps:

I'm not too sure what you mean in your first post about being in Safe Mode,
so can you please confirm the following:

You say that the sound works in Safe Mode, so you can play .wav files and
..mid files - but NOT audio CD's (CD drivers don't load in Safe Mode!)?

Try booting into Safe Mode using the official method, (i.e. Ctrl or F8 at
bootup) and confirm the previous sentence.

In Normal Mode, can you play ANY of the above (including audio CD's)? Do you
hear the WinMe 'fanfare' as Windows opens?

When I start in safe mode using F8 at bootup, I get no sound at all (no
WinME "fanfare", no mp3, no CD's)

When I start without the startup files, I get all the audio I need. I do
this by going into msconfig, check Selective Startup, and deselect all the
options underneath it, such as: "Process System.ini file" "Process Win.ini
file" "Load static VxDs" "Load Startup Group Items" "Load environment
variables"
