HDD install not detected
 

I am trying to install a new replacement HDD in my boy's PC (PIII 333MHz,
Win98--yeah, it's old). I have a Seagate 80GB replacement HDD. After a couple
of tries and some cable swaps, I got the machine to boot back up from the
motherboard, but it will not detect the new HDD. It won't even boot from my
Windows staretup disk.
I have all the BIOS settings as per the instructions with the drive. BUT,
when I try to get the PC to auto-detect the HDD, it stalls at "Auto-detecting
new primary master" and that's it. I can't even back out of it; it completely
freezes and I have to power the PC off.
Any ideas?

Some simple questions:
Is the harddrive cables properly installed ??
Is the hard drive jumper set properly
Does the motherboard bios support drives this size.

Back in the old days there were motherboards with 2G limits, 8 G limits and
32 G limits

Don't know. it was my understanding that even if all that was old, it should
still recognize the drive, just as smaller than its actual capacity, which
could then be remedied with a patch.

It came with a CD, but the PC won't get past the initial memory check. This
is a brand new blank drive, and there is not other drive in the PC. The one I
had was bad, and this is a replacement. It won't even boot with the Startup
disk so I can get CDROM support.

Go into the BIOS setup and make sure the boot sequence is set
properly. I don't know if the CD that came with the disk is bootable.
If not, set the boot sequence to "A:,C:". Be sure to save the change
when exiting.

So maybe it wasn't the HDD that went bad, but rather the controller? Or
perhaps the power isn't good and that caused the old drive to go bad and
prevents the new one from behaving?

Older Award BIOSes have a disk size limit. It used to be 34GB and then
65GB. If such a BIOS tries to detect a larger disk it aborts with a
division overflow.

Can you check if there is a BIOS update available ? Check the mainboard
manufacturer's site.

I think it's an ASUS board. But even if one exists, how do I install it w/o
the ability to boot up?

Could be. No idea how to check. My PC won't complete a boot with the old HDD.
Powers up OK tho'.
