Icons in lower right - quick launch?
 

I have several icons on the right side of the menu bar. I
believe each of these represent a program running in the
background. I would like to remove/prevent some of these
icons from existing. How do I do this and will this speed
up my machine?

This is your System Tray. You will see
the total list when (with no major apps running)
you Ctl Alt Del. Windows needs some of these
items e.g. RNAPP. When you can identify others
you do not need (e.g. desktop video adjuster) go
to each and uncheck any box "Show on Toolbar.:
