System monitor window appears at start up

Recently the system monitor window started appearing when I start my
computer. It appears right before my windows login window comes up requesting
password. Whats up with this and how can I make it stop?

glee October 27th 04 04:26 AM

See if there is a shortcut to System Monitor (Sysmon.exe) in one of the StartUp
folders:
-C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp
-C:\Windows\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Delete the shortcut there, if found.

If no shortcut is found, it may be loading from the registry or the Win.ini or
System.ini file.
Click Start Run, type msconfig and click OK. Click the Startup tab, and look
for an entry naming the sysmon.exe file. If found, uncheck the box next to it,
click OK, and reboot.

Post back with your findings.

I checked all places you mentioned and the only place I found a "sysmon" file
was in windows folder. When I opened it, it appeared just as it does on
start up...blank. I did not find any shortcuts to delete or any application
under the start up tab named "sysmon.exe". Any other ideas? While we are at
it maybe you can also troubleshoot why Windows98 freezes on startup.
Sometimes I have to turn computer off and back on a couple of times before I
get a successful startup. Ctrl-Alt-Delete has never resulted in anything but
a blue screen stating system busy or unstable at which point I just have to
hit the power button and reboot. I appreciate any assistance you can give
me. Thanks for your time.

Click StartRun, type MSINFO32 and click OK.
In the left pane of the System Information window, click the + sign to expand the
"Software Environment" category.
In the left pane, click to select "Startup Programs"....they will appear in a list
on the right.
Press Ctrl-A on the keyboard, which will highlight everything in the list on the
right.
Press Ctrl-C to copy the list to the 'clipboard'.
Open a reply to this message, click in the body of the message and press Ctrl-V to
paste the list from the clipboard to the message, and post back to this thread.

I don't see anything there that would bring up the System Monitor. You mentioned
that you see it *before* you get the logon box at startup. Try this: at the logon
box, instead of logging on, click Cancel to get to the 'default' desktop, and check
the startup tab of msconfig from there, for an entry pointing to sysmon.exe. Also
look on the Win.ini and System.ini tabs, and the autoexec.bat tab

Am I being thick or can you just remove that unwanted program that launches during start up by going to start button right click, programs and remove the offending item and place it in a new folder named not start up(you have to create this)?
