Sound/Audio problems

Win98se.
I have VIA AC'97 Audio Controller.
My sound intermitently quits, but a reboot always brings
it back, which in itself is annoying.
Sometimes the sound is fine for days, but other times it will
dissappear 10mins after a reboot.
Any ideas?

Create a new folder named Everest and extract the contents of the download to
that folder.
Open the folder and double-click everest.exe to run the application.

Next:
Click the + next to Computer.
Click Summary.
Right click in the right pane and in the popup menu click "Copy All".
Start a response in this thread.
Right click in the text window and in the popup menu click "Paste".

Brian, ta for reply.
I have Everest/Aida, am reasonably familiar with both.
All, and I do mean All, my anti virii & anti malaware are always fully
updated and run on a daily basis..... just wanted to make that clear so
it can be ruled out.
Because, even though I want the problem resolved, I am curious as
to why it is an intermittent problem.
I know specks of dust can make differences at different times for different
reasons according to different conditions....... nuff said on that.

I am leaning toward it being a WMP problem as it has never acted
'perfectly' since its installation. (wmp 9, installed about 2 months ago)

Have you heard of this sort of thing from wmp 9?
Could it be anything else?
