word.doc pictures
 

I use Windows98 but don't have `MS Word`. So to view pictures sent to me
in the `.doc` format I've used `wordviewer97` which has been made available
by Microsoft for just this purpose.
However, my pictures are not opening properly anymore, they are in the
colors of blue and red only. Thinking my viewer was broken I redownloaded
the 97 viewer but with no change to the results. I then deleted my 97 viewer
and downloaded the `wordviewer 2003`. This gave me the message, "requires a
newer version of windows".
Is this an example of Microsoft trying to force people to upgrade from
Win98 to XP?
They might find instead that people will `upgrade` to an open source OS
instead.

No, it is an example of a person downloading a program that requires W2K SP3
or XP and trying to run it on W98.

The problem is that you shouldn't be using WORD to send and view pictures.
Get the person who sends you the pictures to send them in a proper image
format, such as JPG. Then you have a vast range of good viewers available
to you, many of them free, such as -

the pdf format seems to be coming more and more popular. It's no good saying
to people "don't use it".

Found the problem. Changed my 32 bit colors to 16. Can see the pictures
now. Must have happened when I upgraded to a 17" screen.

Uh? So you choose to use an application for a purpose for which it is
particularly inappropriate, then you complain that Microsoft is trying to
force you to upgrade. Sorry, but that just doesn't make sense.

I agree with the .JPG reply.
It is a standard format for pictures and I dont hear anything
about it being made redundant to the likes of .doc or .pdf.
kiss; keep it simple and remind the sender that .jpg is still the
best way for now.
