What exactly does a hard drive with auto-run enabled look like? What
does it do?

| What is the "NoStartBanner" setting for?

The pre-Internet Explorer 4 Windows 95 also shoots an animated
arrow across the taskbar at bootup, pointing at the Start menu,
and telling you to click here to begin.

Meaning that because I have a "NoStartBanner", that my Win-98se system
must have started life as Win-95?

I had a look at a system that I know was installed as a Win-98SE
system, and it has only these two reg entries:

CDRAutoRun 00 00 00 00
NoDriveTypeAutoRun ff 00 00 00

My system has those two, plus these three:

NoActiveDesktop
NoSaveSettings
NoStartBanner

It will autorun whatever is in an autorun.inf file placed in the root of the
drive....very handy feature for malware droppers.

No, that info is not entirely accurate. The setting is also used in and can exist
in Win98.....AFAIR the Click Here To Begin arrow can appear in Win98 also. Those
settings are often added by tweaking utilities, even if you don't set them on or
off.....TweakUI for example adds those entries.

I had a look at a system that I know was installed as a Win-98SE

CDRAutoRun 00 00 00 00

You have probably had TweakUI or other such utilities installed at some time, and
they added those entries.

As glee said & I've read here before, an Autorun.inf in the root
directory (C:\) would run at boot. .Inf's are very powerful & can do
just about anything. Usually, though, it's an innocent .inf copied from
a CD that causes the following issue...

I'll gleefully go with Glen on what he said. I have none of those.
Probably the top one is very good, as Active Desktop is another mischeif
maker cquirke has often warned against. I just never use it. Here is
what NoSaveSettings does...

Glee is likely right, that those three were set by the user. They
certainly didn't come with the stock install of this machine of mine.

|
| CDRAutoRun 00 00 00 00

Not sure what this one does, but mine has always been like that too.

| NoActiveDesktop 01 00 00 00

That's probably a good one to turn off Active Desktop shenanigans.

| NoDriveTypeAutoRun 95 00 00 00

You probably should go at least to... 9D 00 00 00... which turns off
autorun of the root drive C:\...

;The bitmasks and hex values for NoDriveTypeAutoRun
;00000001b 01h DRIVE_UNKNOWN (The drive type cannot be determined)
;00000010b 02h DRIVE_NO_ROOT_DIR (The root path is invalid)
;00000100b 04h DRIVE_REMOVABLE (includes floppies and zip drives)
;00001000b 08h DRIVE_FIXED (includes drives mapped to a HDD directory)

;00100000b 20h DRIVE_CDROM
;01000000b 40h DRIVE_RAMDISK
;10000000b 80h Undefined (reserved for future drive types)
;(values are additive)

| NoSaveSettings 00 00 00 00
| NoStartBAnner 00 00 00 00

These two have a value of zero; therefore, they are not in effect.
Probably, you don't want the first of them (because you want those
settings to be saved) & the second is probably unnecessary in Win98. I
get no such banner-- & without that key!

| Note that those keys are also found he

Some Registry keys show up TWICE as displayed by RegEdit, but really
exist only ONCE in the Registry...

.......Quote a Registry Detective help screen......
The five root keys appear in the Registry tree just below the actual
root, My Computer. They a

HKEY_CURRENT_USER - settings specific to the current user
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - settings that apply globally, regardless of user
HKEY_USERS - settings specific to users, including the current user
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG - settings specific to the current hardware
configuration
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT - file associations and other system settings

Registry Detective searches the root keys in the order shown here.

Note that there's some overlap among the root keys - three of them are
actually "branches" of the other two. HKEY_CURRENT_USER is a branch of
HKEY_USERS. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG are branches of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. REGEDIT will turn up duplicate results for keys
within HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, or HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG.
Registry Detective is smart enough to find each match exactly once.

PolEdit could do it too, yea. But, just because all 5 computers have
TweakUI or PolEdit, it doesn't mean all 5 users used it to create those

Howdy Bill, and PCR,
It's been a while but as I recall, the NoSaveSettings entry will be binary (hex)
when added by TweakUI, and will be DWORD when added by poledit.

Also, as you know, other tweaking utilities (and there are/were a lot of them) will
also add the entries, whether as hex or dword may vary. Additionally, I found the
dword NoSaveSettings caused different behaviour than the hex NoSaveSettings, when
enabled (set to 1).

Hello, glee. It's a pity, in their own article...
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q130234
Save Settings On Exit Option Enabled by Default

...., MS doesn't say which format NoSaveSettings should take. Different
formats likely means different bits are set, especially if the value is
not zero & if it is signed. Ultimately, it depends upon the app reading
the Registry to understand the value read. I hope those apps had another
place to look besides that article to discover the format to expect. My
guess is it should be binary, because the others in that key are binary.
Also, it's really the first byte that is of importance...

OFF: 00 00 00 00
ON: 01 00 00 00

But those are mostly double negatives, as Blanton iterated. This is
pretty much how (Bicycle) Rob once put it...
