As regards copying one harddrive to another is there any difference among
the following terms?

backup
copy
image
clone
and any other such words.

involves no compression and simply recreates a partition on free space on
the same or different drive.

Lacks specificity. What other such words did you have in mind.

Note that backup and copying happen within the OS system whereas imaging and
cloning deal with entire partitions and don't care about file and folder
structures.
