Anti-virus for Win 98

My husband has Win 98 and had AVG (free) anti-virus in it, but had the old
(7.1) version. We've been trying to download their current version (7.5)
and twice it got almost finished (takes a LONG time, he has dial-up) and
there was a problem and it quit. Does anyone know if perhaps that version
of AVG isn't compatible with Win 98? Thanks for any help or suggestions

G'day Joy,
I had that problem when I had dial up.
seems to "time out"
best to have a friend download it that has Broadband.
Took about 12 mins IIRC on broadband
I think it worth the effort.
AVG is marvelous.

I haven't updated mine either (still using 7.1) and with Window98SE. But
I'm guessing that the new version is still compatible with Win98SE unless
(on their site) it says it isn't. What was the EXACT problem or error
message??

Another idea you might want to try is to download the full AVG program to a
separate location on the hard drive and install it from there (rather than
letting it be installed as an "update" version).

An even cleaner solution might be to uninstall AVG first, reboot, and then
install the new version (the new complete version, not an update version to
an existing one).

If you have access to Norton Anti-Virus (2001 or 2002) or Norton
System Works (2001 or 2002) then that's what I recommend.

NSW will include NAV.

Once installed, NAV will update itself and use the most recent scan
engine and virus definition files. Don't let the age of the product
fool you.

I may have those Norton CDs around here somewhere (if I can find them!) but
then it wouldn't have the most up-to-date virus protection, would it? I
thought older Norton gave up updates only for a year after purchase.

Hmmm, that's an idea. I think our son has high speed and my husband's
computer is a laptop (in a docking station) so it might be fairly easy to
try that approach.

To uninstall the old/current version, would that be done through Control
Panel; Add/Remove programs?

It works fine in Win98, but you should download it to save to the hard drive, rather
than installing it from the current location. Then you can do an off-line
installation/upgrade. If you have a problem upgrading from the saved download,
uninstall AVG 7.1 through Add/Remove Programs, then do a clean install of AVG 7.5

Once installed, you have a year's worth of updates before it tells you
to pay for another year. But for NAV 2001 and 2002, it's very easy to
get around that by simply un-installing it then re-installing it. By
doing that, you've tricked it and it thinks it's being installed for
the first time.

And don't worry about it being up-to-date. It will be. When you
install NAV 2001 or 2002 and perform the first on-line update, it will
download about 10 mb worth of data and program updates. It will then
be completely up to date with the latest virus definitions and scan
engine.
