"This page cannot be displayed" problem!
 

Anyone...........
Weird problem on my Windows ME system: I lose Internet connectivity
approximately 15 minutes after bootup. Until then all works very well. But
when it dies, IE has the subject-line error message (whether using my dialup
OR high speed). If I reboot, all works well again for about 15 minutes,
then no more Internet again. Also, my other Internet applications don't
work -- anti-virus updates, Instant Messaging, nothing else! HOWEVER, I can
ping and tracert all over the world!!!!!!!!!!! Everything else on the
computer works great, and no viruses caught by AVG.

This is too crazy. Any help would be appreciated.

This sounds to me as if you may be getting Windows confused by having two
methods of connection potentially active at the same time - and it's
choosing the wrong one.

Go to Internet Properties |Connections - and ensure that 'never dial a
connection' is the option you've chosen, and that there are no unwanted
entries in the connection settings.

Thanks Noel, but I've done as you said befo no help. The problem is much
deeper, since my connectivity only dies "after approximately 15 minutes
after bootup" and since the problem is not an Internet Explorer issue
(Windows Media Player will not work after 15 mins, or Firefox browser, or
any other app that uses the Net). But remember, all is great immediately
after bootup or restart!!!! I can go to many, many sites for about 15
minutes!

I keep thinking TCP/IP configurations, etc, etc, but note that I can ping
and tracert after Internet connectivity is lost. I've looked at ALL the
Microsoft support sites on this, and this particular issue is not addressed
anywhere. Guess it might be time for a reformat and OS installation!

Do you see any error message? Since you can ping and tracert but not
surf, etc. it would appear the problem might be due to a DNS failure of
some sort. What happens if you when the connection has failed you try and
reach Google in Firefox or IE using the address 64.233.167.99 rather than
www.google.com?

Mike, let me get back with you on this, in a day or two! Don't ask.
However, I feel that using a "non-DNS" address will produce the same
results: nothing. Remember, this is a time-related issue, as strange as it
seems.

I will get back with you on the details of your message. In the end, I'm
going to win this strange battle!!

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC

Thanks again, Noel. I will do as you suggest, using all the resources you
mentioned. I'll get back with you on this in a couple of days.

REMEMBER -- this seems to be a "time-related" issue. My software must be
all good since I DO get Internet connectivity for approx 15 minutes after
each reboot. I don't see how a virus could cause such a problem as this,
but something must! Too wicked.

Try LSPFix as Noel has suggested as it is possible that the Winsock
Stack has been corrupted/damaged just enough so that the connection
deteriorates over time but is fine when you restart the system.

Wow, I've got the same problem on a friend's computer running WinME. I have
tried everything that Mike suggested, in addition to Noel's and even used a
program that cleans/wipes the winsock/lsp/dun software/registry information and
re-installs it to see if that fixes it (it didn't). This only started happening
about a week ago, up till then everything was great.
One of the problems that I see, in addition to the original problem, is that
occasionally I also can't ping external sites once the "internet" connectivity
shuts down (either via the IP or UNC).
I thought it might be a NIC problem too, so I uninstalled/removed the NIC and
put a new one in. Same problem. I also disabled everything that was running at
startup and several vxd's that were "add-ons" that I knew wouldn't crash the
system.
When I looked at the drivers loaded for the NIC, I noticed that it said the
tcpip.sys wasn't loaded so I replaced it (using the WinME boot disk "minimal"),
and found that I had to put it in the System directory instead of the
System32/drivers for it to find and load it. Still no difference.

(perhaps a little desperate here, but...)??

What malware did my suggestions find - if any?
