Strange picture
 

A picture of a car brake cylinder mysteriously shows up on
my desktop just before my system shuts down. Don;t know
where it came from (although hubby is a car junky surfing
internet for car pictures - but he swears he didn't
download it) or how to find it on my hard drive to delete
it. any ideas?

Look in the c:\ directory for the files
logo.sys
logos.sys
logow.sys

these three are the files that appear as screens at start and shutdown.
Normally, they are included in one of the system files, but if the file is
present, it takes precedence, and is shown instead the system file copy.


rename any of the above found to (name).OLD, and the relevant screen will
revert to the standard one.

Ha! I'd flagged this Noel because I wanted to see the answer, I should show
you the notepad note that I left myself. It said, with the name of the post
and date/time, that I had flagged it and that I wanted to grab the answer as
it was a pretty rare question and that probably Noel would know the answer!

I should have been betting on the ponies I suppose!

Ponies are definitely a better bet than I am - under most circumstances!!
My knowledge of Windows is purely self-taught, and mostly from reading these
groups (and some playing around at homeg)
What odds were you giving yourself? (and we have yet to find out whether I
was right, or not!!)

The two shutdown pictures are logos.sys and logow.sys - but you have now
confused me by saying that you had a logo.sys, and that the unwanted picture
is in your startup, rather than your shutdown
Which is it?

It may be that the file is hidden - check that you have your Folder Options
set so that you can view both Hidden files/folders and System Files/folders.

Regarding the shut down 'splash' - the orange text on a black background
'It's now safe to turn off your computer" message, then you need to search
for and replace LOGOS.SYS in your Windows folder. A fresh 'original' copy of
the file can be found and extracted from the NET4.CAB folder on your WinMe
CD using the extract utility in msconfig.exe.

You should also run a virus check and spyware check to try to determine what
put your 'new' picture on your machine.

Sorry about the confusion. The pictures shows up at logon
and dhutdown. I already had my view set to see ALL files.
I expanded my search to LOGO*.* and got 23 files. some of
them are gifs, but none of the gifs are that picture.
I'll try some of the other suggestions aand get back.
