Program list in Task Manager - Win 2000

Hello,

I know this is a 98 newsgroup but can't find one for 2000. If not appropriate here, is there another newsgroup where I should post this?

For anyone familiar with Win2000... I can't hear any flash videos online. MP3, etc., online are fine, and no problem with any audio files on my computer. Videos on youtube, for example, are just fine but can't hear the audio.

2nd question... This is a screen capture from Task manager just after the PC is powered on and all AVG has updated and settled in. Which of these programs could I remove? And do any look suspicious?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know if there are win-2k groups, but the _better_ win-98 group
to post to is microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion.

I'm running flash version 11.6.602.171 on my win-98 systems.

I sometimes notice that to hear audio, I have to click the mute button
on the bottom control-panel of the flash window, and then click it again
to hear the sound. You might want to try that.

I would either run msconfig or mess with your registry and get rid of:

- adobearm.exe
- jqs.exe
- jusched.exe

Sometimes to really make those 3 disappear you need to delete or rename
the files so the system can't find them. That's easy to do on a win-98
system (just boot into DOS) but on an NT-based system with that fabulous
NTFS, good luck.

Don't know what these a

- keyhook.exe
- pctspk.exe
- bjmyprt.exe (probably printer-related and not really necessary)

If you can't modify a file in the fake DOS window or anywhere
else in Windows, you could still use a bootable Linux distro
such as SystemRescueCD to access the drive using the ntfs-3g
driver. I think there might even be limited DOS programs for
accessing and (to some extent) modifying NTFS partitions. Of
course, it would be best to have a backup in case things go
wrong.

Thanks 98 Guy!! That was the problem. The mute button at the bottom left of the youtube windows was muted. For others - I clicked on it and then slid the volume bar all the way to the right and the sound returned.

I searched quite a bit and lots of "solutions" like uninstall/reinstall, make changes to the registry, etc. I learned long ago (school of hard knocks) that a lot of these kinds of problems are "operator error" and not system problems unless more than one thing is not working right.

Thanks again for the help!

Thanks again. Since the mute button solved the problem, I won't fiddle around with these programs for now. Just for info, keyhook is related to the keyboard -- goofy name sounds like malware but it's OK. bjmyprt is Cannon Bubble Jet printer. pctspk has something to do with hardware that is no longer on the computer.

Thanks again, guys for the help. FYI, I posted to several newsgroups more on topic to this and got no responses from any of them. Glad to see you are keeping one good newsgroup alive for us using old OS's.

There's always alt.os.windows2000.

I would either run msconfig or mess with your registry and get rid of:

- adobearm.exe

Adobe Reader and Acrobat Manager. There may be a program setting somewhere
to turn it off.

- jqs.exe

Java Quick Starter. Disable it (and "Place Java icon in system tray") in the
Java control panel.

- jusched.exe

Java Update Scheduler. Disable it automatic updates the Java control panel.
(Might be called "JRE automatic download" or similar.)

Sometimes to really make those 3 disappear you need to delete or rename
the files so the system can't find them. That's easy to do on a win-98

Don't know what these a

- keyhook.exe
- pctspk.exe

Modem. Kill it from the registry, reboot to safe mode, delete it.

- bjmyprt.exe (probably printer-related and not really necessary)

"Canon My Printer".
This process is used for printing services. It is an essential process for
the proper operation of your Canon printer so it should not be deleted.

I would also kill ntvdm, wowexec, and psp.exe. PSP is for the modem but not
necessary; the other two are to load it. Killing PSP wherever it's loading
should handle the other two.

Reader_sl.exe is the Acrobat Reader equivalent to JQS. There should be a
setting somewhere in Acrobat Reader to disable it.

Sistray.exe is for your graphics card. I would remove it from wherever it's
starting; it looks like it may destabilize your system.

Yes, there are, you don't have to use Linux. There are more that give
read access than modify (there may be only one of the latter).

The name NTFS4DOS comes to mind for one of them. 98Guy do you
remember/know, or do you just blank out anything NTFS-related?

Looking around, chntpw seems like it should do the job, even
though it was originally meant just for changing passwords (good
old Microsoft security).
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Chntpw_for_Dos

A better description of it is on the site where I found it
(along with lots of other fun DOS FS tools):
http://reimagery.com/fsfd/disk1.htm#filesys

Though chntpw is based on a very old Linux NTFS driver anyway,
so if making a bootdisk I'd recommend Linux where appropriate. I
don't deny that DOS can be better some times though...
