Hi - it's a bit off topic but I would like your advice and comments. I have
an ATi 9000 Pro 64MB video card in one computer and a GeForce 4 440MX - 64MB
in another. Both are DirectX 7 compliant.

I play the Medal of Honor game series, and want to buy the Pacific Assault
edition which was released a few weeks ago. The Pacific Assault specs call
for a DirectX 8.1 or higher compatible video card. I know that neither of
my video cards will work since the Pacific Assault Demo checks what video
card is in your PC.

My spending limit is $170 since I'll probably build a couple of new
computers next year. Can you suggest a video card that's DirectX 9
compatible?

One other thing. I just bought a 19 inch Samsung SyncMaster 997DF CRT
monitor to replace my 3 1/2 year old Samsung SyncMaster 955DF 19 inch
monitor which developed a problem of shaking video. This new monitor is
better than the old one which was fabulous.

You shouldn't have to purchase another adapter. I am using the same ATi =
Radeon 9000 Pro in a 98SE machine with DX 9.0b and have no problems =
whatsoever.
I have the latest drivers ( I believe ) from the ATi site.

Brian, I sure am glad you posted that info. I don't know why I thought my
ATi 9000 Pro was only DirectX 7 compliant. Right now I have it in the PC on
which I play games.

The nVidia based card's fan died and I ordered a new heatsink/fan combo for
it. I put the nVidia card in this PC because it has a software adjustment
called Digital Vibrance, which really makes the games look great.

The PC that had the 9000 Pro in it has an onboard 32 MB video chip which is
fine for its main purpose - watching TV and streaming video such as news
reports. (It's connected to a 31 inch Gateway monitor).

So, I am downloading the Pacific Assault demos which are huge. I'll post
back to let you know if the 9000 Pro card will play them.

clearly see the limitations of my current video card though - it doesn't
have all the eye candy. Thanks again for your help.

I guess all these games must be created by the video card manufacturers who
are in a conspiracy to force you to upgrade your hardware.

Glad to hear you at least got to try it out first. I see you're using =
RR. Cable or dialup? How long did that 32?MB dl'd take?

Check the advanced settings and see if you can up the AGP to 2X or 4X if =
your BIOS supports it. You may have to check the BIOS as well to set it =
to 2X or 4X, I did. Unfortunately mine only supports up to 2X.

It's set at 4X AGP. I think the download took about 25 minutes or so. It's
a broadband connection. I am thinking about getting an ATi 9600 XT.
