Nazi Swastikas created in Wallpaper Pattern
 

In the Windows 98, Control Panel, Display, Background, Wallpaper (None) I
found that the Pattern for the (None) selection had been set to create
Swastikas when I selected the (None) selection for Wallpaper and (None)
selection for Patterns. The pattern for that selection is not editable, while
all the others are.

I have run every conceivable anti-virus program as well as spyware and
adware programs to try to remove this setting.

Is there a file somewhere that controls the default setting for Background,
Pattern (None)? I would like to remove this offensive symbol from my
computer.

Your PC is probably loaded with spyware that is also hogging resources.

I don't think so. I ran Pest Patrol and Ad-Aware three times each. They came
back clean. This is not a case of not enough resources. The file has been
changed and I need to know what the name of the file is that contains the
Background (none) Patterns (none) setup.

Give SpyBot a try. Run it in Advanced Mode and put a check mark next to all
the File Sets boxes.

I tried your suggestion of running and cleaning the system with Spybot. I
also reran Ad Aware and Pest Patrol and none of them removed the nazi
swastica graphic alteration to the "None" pattern in Control Panel
-Display-Background (none) -Patterns(none).

Is there somewhere in the Windows system where there is a file that contains
or controls the background pattern used in Display? If so, can it be altered
or replaced. Do you or does anyone know the name of the file or how to
accomplish this.

Look for for a bitmap image called something similar to logow in the
Windows directory which is C:\Windows. Open the logos with a picture viewer
such as Irfanfiew, but do not change the suffix. Once you find the
offensive desktop bitmap, you can delete it.

There is no bitmap file named anything like "logow" in the Windows
directory. There are a couple of files that are system files but they cannot
be read because I believe they are written in some kind of machine code.

What would be helpful, Joe, would be if you really knew the solution and
were not just guessing at possible solutions. I need to know exactly which
file controls the graphic element of "Background (None)", "Pattern (None)".
If you don't really know how the pattern is saved or in what file it is
stored, please don't send me on a wildgoose chase.

Well, what can I say? Such problems on PCs are almost always caused by a
virus or spyware. Because of the extensive, and often free tools to remove
viruses and spyware, that is the logical place to start.

As for the bitmap files in the Windows directory, I mentioned that you need
to use Irfanview to open them, and cautioned not to change the suffix
(extension) to a .bmp file.

Did you use Irfanview to open those files? If you did, then something like
this, is what you would see.

Also. check the C\Windows\System directory for the rogue wallpaper. These
are several of the desktop backgrounds that come with Windows 98 such as
Black Thatch and Blue Rivets.

Of course, the offensive wallpaper could be in any directory. This is the
XP Professional wallpaper I modified for my 98SE partition. I created a
separate directory for this particular wallpaper.

hundreds, of people on this newsgroup over the past several years. If you

logow.sys and logos.sys are bitmap files, can be opened and edited in any
graphics program to alter your shutdown screen, the .sys extension is mainly
to fool people to not change it.

The association "None" displays the blank color screen chosen in start
settings control panel appearance desktop, check the settings of 'custom
colors' under the drop down for desktop colors, check also that color depth
settings on the settings page are set high enough

Okay, guys,

I will try it again. Joe, I thought I was looking for bitmap files, not
system files so when I did not find the *.bmp file, I proceeded no further.
I will start by getting the irfanview graphic program and proceed from there.
