IIRC, there were some difference related to USB support in 95 (as

Indeed. '95 just about had _some_ USB support (and I'm not even sure if
that had to be added from a floppy that came with USB-using devices).

Also, ME (the last DOS-based version) is very similar to SE, but does
come with a driver for USB storage devices so it's easier to use. The
help system is worse, but I never found Windows help to be that helpful
anyway.

For '98, you tended to need a driver for each device - including
different makes of memory stick. Someone did create a "universal" driver
for '98; the thing is, you had to have faith it would work, as you had
to _remove_ the individual drivers you'd installed. (I tried not doing,
as I was reluctant to remove a driver that was working, but that made a
huge mess that was difficult to fix.) I once built a system using
"Soporific's tenth anniversary of Windows 98" that incorporated it, and
it worked well (as did the entire system: "Soporific" had clearly put a
_lot_ of work into it). [There were several editions of the "'98
universal USB driver" (it may not have been called exactly that, but
similar).]

Yes. I had to do that for every new one until I happened on one variety
from Intenso that brought a standard driver with it. Since then I've
never had to install. And I didn't deinstall anything either.
