Internal DVD+RW driver?

I have Windows ME with a Memorex branded internal DVD+RW drive that I just
installed.

Now, under my system properties, the drive is shown and supposedly working
properly. But my OS does not see any disc, and asks me to put one in ---
even though I already did.

I want to point out the driver is from Microsoft, and it's dated from June
of 2000.

I didn't get any drivers from the installation kit, and wonder if that's not
why the drive won't recognize media (nor, of course, play it).

I'll go look around Memorex's site again for updated drivers, again. The
fist go-around did not prove successful.

But, perhaps someone has a suggestion that might work? Maybe using another
manufacturer's driver?

What media are you using, you don't say. Is this blank media or a
pre-recorded CD or DVD? If blank media remember that Win Me contains no
software to write CDS or DVDs and you will need to install the necessary
software such as for example Ahead's Nero. Explorer cannot natively
access a blank CD or DVD.

Sorry Mike, but it cannot read any media, period.

Not CDs factory burned or my burn, nor DVDs of similar.

The drive just below it works fine, and that can read CDs fine.

It's possible that the drive is "broken". Is there any chance of your
trying it in another PC?

Oh yeah, that was my first thought.

In fact I returned the drive to my retailer with that same thought process.

But, going through the same machinations led to the same results. So, it's
not the drive.

I want to believe it's a driver issue. But cannot find any corroborating
information.

I don't think it's necessarily a driver problem since you've confirmed
that you have another optical drive working fine but it could be the
controller on the motherboard. Assuming that it is an IDE/ATA drive have
you tried switching from master to slave (or vice versa) or swapping to
the other controller?

Yes,

My thoughts as well. Perhaps looking to avoid that, as it can be a knuckle
buster.

But, I am now on my 3rd drive, 2nd manufacturer, and still trying to figure
it out.

Does it get easier once I get to XP? sigh

Hardware problems often persist regardless of the operating system
installed. That is newer operating systems such as Vista and 64 bit
operating systems such as XP Pro x64 where lack of drivers can be a real
problem.

Following on from Mikes suggestion, you could also isolate WinMe and satisfy
yourself by confirming that it isn't a WinMe issue:-

Boot from your WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk and select option 2) - Start with
CD Support and at the very end of the boot process, it should tell you that
"Your CD-ROM is drive X"

(NB drive X may not necessarily be the same letter as you would expect to
see in WinMe.)

Insert your WinMe CD into the CD-ROM drive.

Now, at the A:\ prompt, type "X" (or whatever letter above, and no quotes)
then press Return

At the X:\ prompt, type "dir" (no quotes) then press Return.

Do you see any sort of directory listing running down the screen?

If not and/or you get an error report, then it sounds like your CD-ROM is
either dead or there is a hardware/cable issue - as Mike had suggested.
