DirectX and the System Restore utility
Hi! I hope this is the right place to put this question...
When I do the Windows update, one of the critical updates=20 is DirectX 9.0b End-User Runtime. I haven=B4t done the=20 download yet because I have some doubts. First, the Microsoft recommends that Windows Me users=20 should create a "System Restore" point before installing=20 the DirectX 9.0b. I have never used the System Restore=20 utility before, so I would like to know how to create=20 that "System Restore" point. Second, I read the article 179113 from the Microsoft=20 Knowledge Base "How to Download and Install Direct X" and,=20 in the end, it said that the information in the article=20 applies to Microsoft DirectX 9.0 Runtime and Microsoft=20 DirectX 8.x Runtime users. I have the Directx 7.1(or 7.0?) on my computer. Is it save=20 to do the update to DirectX 9.0b? Thanks for any support. Carla Portugal |

Yes, it's perfectly safe to install Dx9 over Dx7 - and is the route that people who use the MS Security CD on a fresh install of ME will take. To create a System Restore point - first check that System Restore is working!! Do a search for the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SMGR.DLL - right-click on it, and select Properties. Click on the Version tab.... If you are to have a working System Restore the File Version must be 4.90.0.3003. If it's anything else, then It's possible that you haven't installed the System Restore Patch - without which any current restore points are just space fillers. To install the patch, either visit Windows Update, or go here, and download the patch for offline install http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q290700 Run the installer, and windows should reset System Restore at the same time, clearing your old restore points (which wouldn't have worked, anyhow), and creating a single new one. Once you've checked that, and corrected if necessary, then you may want to check out SR more thoroughly - look here for instructions (and other information on System Restore) http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/quiktipsr.htm for information on what SR can do for you, then look here http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=267951 HTH -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "CC" wrote in message ...
