Hi friends,

two 98 SE computers only configured to
adquire IP adresses automatically
can interact through a network ?

both machines have the same workgroup's name.

thanks very much in advance,
Carlos.

Depending upon the age of the NICs, you can use a cross-over cable for
older NICs, or newer NICs should be able to use a standard cable.
A couple of links for info:
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/426
examples of both comm port and Ethernet styles
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossover_cable
specifics:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Null_modem
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable

A NIC connection will require you to have Microsoft Network Client
installed in Control Panel Networking, AND File and Printer Sharing
enabled. You MUST also share some folders/files on the computers. It is
NOT recommended to share the entire disks or the system folders...
Null modem or direct comm port cable connect requires using the
supplied Accessory or some other communication program.

Yes. The computers will automatically assign themselves private IP
addresses in the 169.254.x.x range after waiting for DHCP requests to
time out at startup.

To make startup faster, assign them static IP addresses in one of
these ranges:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

hi group

Particularily, I want to have automatic configurations
only because it is the more rapid solution,

but now I have a Win98 that automatic
config is no working anymore, Win98 doesn't connect
to internet, but I shall no use, at least by now
non auto configurations.

Perhaps I modified some config values
I have unistalled all, and installed again

Client for Microsoft Networks
Ethernet controller
TCP IP and, in this I have

- obtain IP automatically
- use DHCP for WINS
- do not use DNS

thanks very much in advance,
Carlos.
