WMP doesn't recognise USB ext HD

I have Win98SE with Windows Media Player 9. WMP shows
only my CD-RW drive, but does not show my USB connected
external hard drive. I would like to be able to recor_d
from_ WMP to my external hard drive because there would be
signficantly more space on that than using_ a CD.

The WMP Help states that USB connected devices are
supported.

The downloadable plugins web page doesn't show any plugins
to solve this issue.

Any ideas how I can get WMP to record to my external hard
drive would be appreciated.

You cannot record to an external hd as it does not support the pcm format
that the cdrom support. You can transfer files from one hd to another by
using windows explorer but you cannot create audio hd as there is not such
