Anybody running WINME with any distro of Linux..?
 

Hello group... :-

Just an enquiry...not flippant...but I managed to duel boot WinME with SuSE
9 Prof.. joined up with a Linux user group It will remain anon.. ...
mentioned my duel boot setup...my point.. and question.. .purely from a
WinME point of view... thus the post to this group...did anybody get an
"attitude problem" from the Linux group...ie why are you using
"Windoze"..."Get yourself a real operating system..."etc... I guess I'm
talking about this so called Redmond Seattle OpenSource... camp
mentality...you know ...never the twain shall meet...any opinions?.. the
opinions I got from the Linux group were mixed..ie anything from the puerile
"geek"..to a more considered adult attitude... about how and why you adopt
a particular operating system to use....

What you got was a fairly typical flaming from an uneducated and uncaring
minority.
I'd suggest that you change your newsgroup rather than your OS!g

I've never used Linux - and see no present need to ever do so (except for
curiosity) - so can't comment on it's (supposedly) perceived superiority
over Windows, however, some general comments may be in order.

1) Linux out-of-the-box is no more secure than Windows
2) the general capabilities of the users of Linux may have been higher than
those of Windows users in the past - but this is evening out as time goes on
and the hype surrounding Linux takes hold.
3) the result of the above is likely to lead to an explosion in discovered
vulnerabilities in Linux, as the script-kiddies find ways, and dupes, to
infect Linux PC's.
4) the OS as a mass-distribution has yet to prove itself under the sort of
sustained attack that Windows has endured for the past 10 years (my - has it
really been that long?).

Linux, from what I hear, is extremely good at certain things - and rubbish
at others.
Windows perforce has had to be a generalist OS - and has succeeded admirably
for the vast majority of its users.

My reason is because Microsoft are heading towards a software rental model
and ultimately a future where you don't control your computer, they do.

I will. The *superiority* is generally touted by the archetypal *nerd*, ie
sits in front of computer all day, tells self he's superior because, eg, he
gets maths and physics and could conquer the world if he put his mind to it.
He doesn't like Windows because before Windows he was deferred to as an
expert and now he's ignored as a social inadequate. If he had the
intelligence to understand the utility of computers and thus of Windows,
he'd probably write viruses for them. But like anyone hammering on about
*superiority*, he's trying to deflect from feelings of the opposite.

Well, now that SP2 is out, fewer XP users will be infected the moment they
first go online.

Those same users won't be able to get Linux running, quite apart from there
are no worms permanently trying to infect Linux like Blaster and Sasser.

See above. Well, it may be going that way but it sure as hell ain't there
yet! Linux is much more difficult than Windows. But that probably is the
point, anyhow, as when Linux is as useable as Windows it'll be, IMO, as
insecure.

To an extent true. But there's rather more executable scope in Windows.

That's what Linux is aiming at. Given the differences of budgetary scale,
it's not doing bad. But, to re-iterate, if the aim is to rival Windows, it
has to be as utilitarian and it's nothing like it now. As I've opined before
re Mozilla, MS is becoming more security conscious and Open Source more
utility conscious and the two are converging.
