My files within the folders are not staying the the List
format that I had selected.
When I go into View, I select List instead of Large Icons
or Small Icons, but they don't stay that way. Is there
something that I can do?

The first time you open Explorer, change the View to the List view (or
whatever View you prefer), then immediately exit Explorer without browsing
to another folder. Now open Explorer again. Your settings should be saved.

Set the view as you want it. On Explorer, click view, folder options, view
tab and click the button:
Like Current Folder
