Display Problem on Warm Reboot

I just replaced my original Dell NVIDIA 32 MB AGP display adapter with an
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX4000 on a ASUS V9400 board with 128MB.
The computer is set up for 2 users, one with 800 X 600 resolution, the other
with 1024 X 768, both 32 bit color.
Everything works fine when starting from "cold" or changing from one user to
the other.
BUT when you shut down Windows with the RESTART option it shuts down but
hangs with a black screen and curser in top left corner.
After reseting with the front button it starts and sometimes wants to go in
Safe mode but forcing normal start allows either user to log on. However the
screen is only 640 X 480 resolution 16 color and there is a warning that the
Display Adapter is wrong or the settings do not work with it.
I have the latest video drivers and used DriverCleaner to ensure all the old
ones were removed first - trying to cure the problem.
I upgraded the Dell BIOS from A8 to A11.
One setting in the Dell Flash CMOS is Video Aperture size with a choice of
64 or 256MB. It used to be set at 64 and I have tried both settings but I do
not know which is correct.

Any ideas, please.

Did you download and install updated drivers for the card from nVidia?

Display Problem on Warm Reboot

On the Dell user forum in connection with a similar, but PCI board, I read
that the newest drivers are not fully compatible with older NVIDIA hardware,
so I was hesitant to try and used the one supplied by ASUS, NVIDIA version
60.86 released 26 April 2004.

Now I see the latest version is 81.98 Dec 21 2005.
In the archive, amongst others, they list 56.64 March 15 2004 and 61.76 July
20 2004.
Interestingly they do not list the one I have!
Which should I try first?
Should I clean out all the old drivers and install the new ones before
updating through Control Panel?
Thanks again.

Try the latest and greatest first if your card is listed as being supported.
