Extra Drive letters with USB connected drives

I'm a software developer working to create a driver stack for a
USB/SATA interface based on the UMSS sample. I have a problem on some
systems where, after a Device Manager refresh, a physical drive is
shown with two drive letters in Explorer. Files created on one of the
drive letters are also visible on the other drive letter.

Does anyone know whats causing this or (better) how to fix it.

TIA.

The first thing I'd do would be to check for an updated BIOS for the problem
system.

Another thing to try is to disconnect the drive. Then boot into Safe mode
and remove the drives and then try clean booting before adding the drive
back to the system.

Thanks for the input,

I tracked the source of the problem to a pre-W98SE driver C2REC.VXD.
If this was present in \Windows\System\Iosubsys, then I'd see the
multiple drive letters on device manager refresh. If the VXD was not
present, then the problem 'went away'. C2REC.VXD came from CeQuadrat,
now part of Roxio. I don't think it's available any more!
