no network connection

i'm working on an AMD-450 with win98se that lost it's network ability.
(using a standard 3c905 net card)

IE cannot connect to anything...nor can i ping anything...

to make sure all the HW was OK...i did a clean install of win98se
on another HD and all works fine.

going back to the original installation
i have uninstalled and reinstalled the net card.
checked for both viruses and spyware and all seems OK.
the machine has no firewall ,nor are there any device conflicts.

the network is configured exactly the same (as far as i can see)
on the non-working installation and the working installation.

what did i miss?
