Why can't I access the data on my slave drive after reinstalling Windows ME
on the master drive? -- Message posted via WindowsKB.com http://www.windowskb.com/Uwe/Forums....neral/200611/1 |

You could start by telling us what it is you can do or see. For example
can you see the drives in Windows Explorer. If not can you see the drives in the Device Manager? You say you reinstalled Win Me, what was the previous operating system? Was that also Win Me or something else? If not Win Me what was the OS? -- Mike Maltby Tim O via WindowsKB.com u27552@uwe wrote: Why can't I access the data on my slave drive after reinstalling Windows ME on the master drive? |

I can not see the slave drive in Windows Explorer.
I can see the master drive in Explorer. I can see both drives in the device manager. Windows ME was the previous operating system. OK, so you can see both drives in the Device Manager which is good. What
do the properties for each drive have to say? For example does one of them have a yellow and white exclamation mark or red cross? What drive letters do the Properties sheet for each drive tell you have been allocated (You will find this on the Settings tab)? Have you perhaps blocked access to drive letters beyond C using a tool such as TweakUI? I asked about the previous operating system in case this had been for example XP and the missing drive formatted to use the NTFS filing system which is unreadable in Win Me without the use of third party drivers. -- Mike Maltby Tim O via WindowsKB.com u27552@uwe wrote: I can not see the slave drive in Windows Explorer. I haven't blocked access to drive letters beyond C using a tool such as
TweakUI. The master has drive letter C and the slave does not have a drive letter. Also no yellow and white exclamation mark or red cross appear. Because GoBack appears on a startup screen I assume that the GoBack program
was in use. Do I use GoBack to get at the files? Fdisk can see both drives. I do not have the computer with me right now so I can't be sure but I believe it says FAT32 if that's possible for a filling system for both drives. Thanks, Tim Mike M wrote: If a drive is present and correct in the Device Manager yet allocated no drive letter this is normally indicative of one of the following: Either the drive is not partitioned or formatted or that it is formatted to use a filing system not recognised by Win Me such as the NTFS filing system. Was the drive previously used with a program such as GoBack as this changes the file system flag so that partition(s) on the drive are only accessible via GoBack. Boot into Win Me and open a DOS window and run FDISK - alternatively boot to DOS using a Win Me boot floppy and enter FDISK at the DOS prompt. When prompted click Y for large disk support. Can FDISK see two drives (if yes there is an option to change drive)? For each drive what does "Display Partition Information" tell you. If FDISK sees your second drive how does it say it is partitioned and what filing system does it say is in use on each of those partitions? Tim,
Your problem is having GoBack spit installed. This changes the file system type flag from 0B hex (FAT32) or just possibly 0c hex to 44 hex and unless you are happy using a disk editor then you should follow whatever instructions Symantec/GoBack provide to allow you to recover from this situation. GoBack support can be accessed via http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoff...port/index.jsp The GoBack manual can be downloaded from http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/hom...5/manuals.html -- Mike Maltby Tim O via WindowsKB.com u27552@uwe wrote: Because GoBack appears on a startup screen I assume that the GoBack program was in use. checked my drives in Fdisk and the master Drive 1 has Partition -1 Status -A
Type -PRI DOS System -FAT32 and Usage 100%. The slave Drive 2 has Partition -1 Status -A Type -Non-DOS System -blank and Usage 100%. Does this help? Does this help?
No, not at all since it adds nothing to your previous post where you confirmed that GoBack was installed on the drive. I have already posted you a link to the Symantec site where I am sure someone from Symantec will be only too happy to help you solve the problem created by their software. -- Mike Maltby Tim O via WindowsKB.com u27552@uwe wrote: checked my drives in Fdisk and the master Drive 1 has Partition -1 Status -A Type -PRI DOS System -FAT32 and Usage 100%. I checked out the Symantec site and can not figure out how to submit
questions into a discussion group. Can you help me out? Thanks again. Mike M wrote: Does this help? I found an executable on the Symantec site that solved my problem. I
downloaded and ran gb_prog.exe /u and I was able to get my data files. Thanks again for all your help. Well done Tim. Any chance that you could post the URL of the utility so
that in future I can help others with a similar problem? -- Mike Maltby Tim O via WindowsKB.com u27552@uwe wrote: I found an executable on the Symantec site that solved my problem. I downloaded and ran gb_prog.exe /u and I was able to get my data files. Thanks again for all your help. |

Congratulations on your persistence, Tim.
I wasn't entirely sure you would be able to do it, ... which shows how little I know. Now you may desire to rerun fdisk to see that the "slave" drive has the same attributes as the primary, master drive. IIRC, later versions of the orphaned Powerquest Partition Magic, ca. ver. 5 , would have permitted you to do the same changes. -- Jack E. I would be glad to post the URL. Will you please let me know how to?

Either copy or type it into your reply to this message. The link is only
a string of characters s so type it if short or copy and paste if long and complex. -- Mike Maltby Tim O via WindowsKB.com u27552@uwe wrote: I would be glad to post the URL. Will you please let me know how to? |

IIRC, later versions of the orphaned Powerquest Partition Magic, ca. ver. 5 As would a file recovery program such as R-Studio (I used this myself to recover 80GB of data for a friend just a couple of weeks ago after the failure of their e-machine that was running GoBack) but that isn't free and I rather thought that Symantec had a tool to do the job. I chose to go the file recovery route rather than change the file system flag as I wasn't certain whether GoBack did more than simply change the flag. Subsequent experimentation told me that changing the flag, in that case from 44H to 07H (it was a NTFS drive) was all that was needed. -- Mike Maltby |

Very nicely done, Mike.
If only all such support incidents were so easily resolved! -- Jack E.
