Internet tools functions for Internet Explorer

WIN98SE

Whether there are 7 ways to get to this setting does not seem overly
relevant here, but my concern is with Internet ExplorerToolsInternet
OptionsConnectionsNever dial.../Dial whenever..../Always Dial....

My goal is to make this read only/unchangeable once i have set it to "Always
dial my default connection".

The reason is that "some thing or things" keeps changing this setting from
Always dial to Never dial.

Does anyone know what physical file these settings are stored in?

Question: How do I make the Internet options dial setting a read-only
situation?

Thanks,

I suspect that the settings are maintained in the registry and, if so, they
cannot be protected from change. You will have to find the application that
is making the change and see if there is an option to turn it off. Also, if
you haven't done so recently, you might want to run a full scan with
up-to-date copies of anti virus and spyware programs.

Thanks, Ron. I agree it is probably in the registry, since when i change it
back and do the old trick of checking most recent update, user.dat and
system.dat show up at the top of date pile. Running AVG daily and spybot
and adaware pretty often, so i doubt virus/spyware is the problem.

The settings are held in the Registry.
You cannot make them read-only.
They should be held he
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet
Settings

AFAIK, the value is held in EnableAutodial and 1= "Always dial..."

I have no idea what is changing yours.

Thanks Alan. I didn't even ask what was changing it since I now that is an
unanswerable question without in-depth surveillance. G

FWIW, and remember that this and 79 cents will get you a cup of coffee at
the local greasy spoon, one that I am pretty sure will change it is to
overtly cancel my dial-up dialog from Bellsouth. And even that result could
be a mix of running software.

I must admit that I preferred certain aspects of totally stand-alone
applications.......

It is being changed by a security program you are using, such as Norton
Internet Security. Look for an option in your security software that is
described as "Prevent auto-dial" or similar.

For a similar problem that might assist in tracking down the cause, see
