missing file or virus?

I'am running Windows Me and I hope someone can explain this to me, my
computer tells me that c:\SXAU.EXE file is missing, but my Nortons anti
virus said, it was a virus and removed it! LOL Whats up with that?

missing file or virus?

The Win Me operating system contains no file with the name sxau.exe and it
is most likely that it was malicious although Norton is the last AV
application you should be running on Win Me. In truth, I'm amazed that your
system still runs since Norton products are very similar to viruses in the
ill effect they can have on Win Me being as that virtually all Norton
products are incompatible with Win Me.

Returning to your problem. You say that your system is telling you that the
file is missing. Can you boot? Do you get to the desktop or does it hang
with that message? If you can boot your system then I suspect there is a
reference to C:\SXAU.EXE in the registry, quite possibly in one of the run
keys. In which case, try the following:
Start | Run, enter MSConfig and when it opens, got to the Startup tab.
Do you see any reference to the file sxau.exe? Perhaps in the right hand
column (Command). If yes, then uncheck the checkbox at the end of the line
containing the reference to sxau.exe and then click Apply and OK and reboot.
On rebooting hopefully you will no longer see any reference to the file
sxau.exe being missing although you will see a message box from MSConfig
reporting that you are in selective startup mode - which you are having
unchecked the reference to sxau.exe. Don't worry about this, just click the
box to not show the message again.

Thank you for your help Mike I did what you said, but it wasn't there. It
seems its no longer on the computer anywhere? You kinda scared me though with
the statement about Nortons, its been on my computer for quite sometime now.
I've had this old computer for about eight yrs. now! Thanks again

missing file or virus?

Norton has destroyed more systems running Win Me than any virus and
therefore I cannot and have not ever recommended its use on Win Me - or come
to that any other operating system but Norton is at its most destructive
when installed on a Win Me system.

I've had this old computer for about eight yrs. now!

Which is about right for an operating system that was finished in June 2000.
Win Me was withdrawn after around 3 years and went out of support in June
2006 since at which time Microsoft stopped producing new patches and ended
paid support for those having problems. Your copy of Norton must be quite a
few years old as I thought they had stopped making a version allegedly
compatible (their claim, no-one else) some years ago.

Your problem. At what point do you see the message about the missing file?
Do you still see the message when you boot to Safe Mode?
