Problems Defraging Sys Drive (C:)
When I start system in SAFE Mode I still have the problem. However, using
Win98SE ScanDisk / Defrag I do get the message "Scan Disk Cannot Continue Because A Program Such As A Disk Utility Has Locked This Drive. Close The Program Or Wait For It To Finish, Then Restart ScanDisk" The other messages was when I tried to use the Norton utility. By the way, Norton's is on there because that is what come with the machine. If you have a suggestion, I am open to it. I do understand that Norton is a very invasive piece of software and is a real PITA to uninstall Since my BIOS has a problem with a limit of 32Gig, and I have a 40Gig hard drive, I really wonder if the problem is not the EZ Bios. Would appear that is the utility. So there is a poss of a conflict. I need the EZ-Bios to see above 32Gig, yet I am trying to defrag a logical drive that is part of a 40Gig physical drive. As I said, I can defrag the other logical drives, just not C:. I get the idea that if I started the system in DOS Mode and ran a defrag that I might be shooting myself in the foot due to he absence of the EC-Bios (DOS would only see the drive a 32Gig and I have no idea what I would drive a stake into. By the way, if on a re-boot I tell the machine to re-boot in DOS the only thing that I get is a fast flashing cursor in the upper left corner of the screen Thanks in advance SomeOn |

You can't defrag from DOS, regardless of whether you have an overlay installed or
not. I don't know why you are not able to boot to DOS....I don't think it is related to the overlay at all, though. Are you trying to start in DOS by using Command Prompt Only from the boot menu before Windows is loaded, or are you using the Start Shutdown option to Restart in MS-DOS Mode? I think these articles may be relevant: Error Message "Windows Cannot Defragment This Drive now Because It Has Been Locked by a Disk Utility" When Using Disk Defragmenter http://support.microsoft.com/kb/286810 MS-DOS Lock and Unlock command help http://www.computerhope.com/lockhlp.htm -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Windows, A+ http://dts-l.net/ http://dts-l.net/goodpost.htm "glee" wrote in message ...
