That information would probably be more useful, if the symptoms
section was more complete.
:)

What makes you think it's the disk cleanup utility?

If the hard drive is very audible, and wasn't before, it may just be
coincidence that you "installed a camera" prior. If you are hearing
more than normal "I/O chatter" on bootup, or when you plug
the camera in, then it very well could be software related. What
happens if you uninstall it?

I uninstalled it last night, de-fragged the hard drive, repaired IE (just in
case) - same thing. It happens when I open web pages or try to type in
urls, mainly.

for about the same amount of time.

Does it sound like the floppy drive is being accessed? Or do you
know it is the HD? Did the install software come on a floppy?
If the floppy drive is making noise, it may be a shortcut or URL
pointing to A:\, in which case you need to hunt it down and delete
it.

Of course, never rule out malware, where IE is involved.

No doesn't sound like the floppy, & software didn't come on floppy, but did
come on cd & it could be that.

Thanks Bill, I'll check out that site & run my adaware program. Will let
you know.

You might try to "appease it", whatever it is, by putting a blank
floppy in the drive, and do whatever you have to do to
cause it.

Since you say it happens when using the address bar in explorer,
see if you can find an entry that starts with file://A:\.. or simply "A:\".
You can do this by typing the first few characters in the address
bar and looking through the list. If found, highlight the entry and
hit the delete key.

If that doesn't pan out, search the registry for the string "A:\", and
report back anything you find.

The very last "floppy accessed" thread here ended with a .pif (DOS
shortcut) was found in "C:\Windows\PIF". So...

(a) Open Explorer to "C:\Windows\PIF".
(b) R-Clk any file in there, Properties, Program tab.
(c) Is "A:\" or "B:\" mentioned in any box of the Program tab?
Then that is the offender. Delete that .pif.

C:\Windows\PIF\ is used to hold .pif's that Windows creates when they
cannot be put anywhere else. A .pif (shortcut to a DOS command) is
created when a DOS command is clicked to execute. Normally, the .pif
will be put into the folder of the command that is clicked. I suppose
one was clicked on the A:\drive, & Windows chose to put the .pif into
C:\Windows\PIF\-- not wanting or unable to write to A: for some reason.

Otherwise...
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=216752
Floppy Disk Drive Is Active When Opening or Saving Files
Do the same for "*.pif", ESPECIALLY for any .pif in "C:\Windows\PIF".

Thanks or Good Luck,

Run Process Explorer and see what is running when the accesses occur:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/fr.../procexp.shtml
Alternately, run Wintop from the MS Power Toys.

You could also press Ctrl+Alt+Delete when the accesses are occurring, and see what
is listed in the Close Program box.
