dual boot with 2 Win98 configurations
 

What I want to do is to have a choice to boot with my
original Win98 configuration, and also a "Plain Vanilla"
Win98 configuration for testing software/hardware
combinations.

I tried installing a second Windows to a different
directory, but now cannot run the original configuration.

All I can find is help on dual booting with diff Ops.

To dual boot as you want to do you will need to use a third party Boot
Manager program such as BootIt Next Generation from www.bootitng.com

Thanks Ron, for the info. I finally found on Microsoft
where 95,98,ME do not allow for multiple booting with each
other.

Will the tryout version of Bootit allow me to make
permanent configurations on my system as I mentioned?

Is it risky?

I don't know where you saw that W95/98/ME do not allow for multiple booting,
but that is not correct. It is quite easy to multi-boot these operating
systems, using a boot manager such as the one that Ron mentioned.

BootitNG is shareware. You can use it for a trial period of 30 days. If,
during that time you decide you don't want to continue using it, simply
delete it. If you do continue to use it, you must register it and obtain a
full licence.

BootitNG is a very reliable product. There are many other boot managers
available.

Probably just that there is no native boot manager for these OS
(Unlike XP or 2K). But as you say, that doesn't preclude multiple
booting with a third-party boot manager.

I do something like that, but each installation is in a separate
partition (and there's a further partition that contains all my data
and no operating system, and they can both see it). I use Boot Magic
(supplied with Partition Magic) as the boot manager. When you tell
it, at boot time, which operating system to boot, it makes that
partition visible and active and the other one invisible/inactive,
so neither installation of Windows can see the other one's C: drive.

thats because your MSDOS.SYS file in your root C:\ points to your
second setup. Make a fresh formated FD & copy to it your IO.SYS &
MSDOS.SYS file, than edit the second´s paths to your original
configuration & save the file. Reboot the machine with that inserted
FD /boot from that first must be set in Bios!/ & you will find
yourself in the original configuration ....

I've automated the process of switching between two Win9x installs on
the same partition, using a collection of .BAT; if you want them,
either email or I can paste into a reply as text that you can paste
out and save as .BAT files on your end.

These take care of remaing away each installation's "Program Files",
which is otherwise a problem, but use the same IO.SYS and other C:\
boot files, so isn't suitable for co-running different WIn9x versions.

I have also not tested then with compressed C: or WinME's SR (I'd
suggest disabling SR in WinME if using this approach; believe me, SR
will royally screw up otherwise)
