saving probelms in excel 97, files moved from nt4 to server 2003

Hello all this is my first question on this system.
We have just migrated all our users and data from Nt4 server to server 2003.
user and computers were migrated first with users still obtaining their data
from Nt4 server using 2003 file permissions (mixed mode), then all the data
was robocopied from the old server to new overnight. This all went to plan
until our users complained they couldn't save their excel docs.
After further investigation i have found that if a user re-opens a excel 97
file that was moved across they network, the excel file will open fine and
user can make changes. the problem occours when the user goes to save the
file. The save progress bar at the bottom reaches 100% but excel then hangs.
If you browse to the network path were user is trying to save to a file of a
random name appears with no file extension, and this file will continue to
grow until the user does a CTRL ALT DEL and quits excel. these files in some
cases have reach 700MB. so if you do the math 100 users creating 700MB files
can soon bring down a server dur to 0 disk space.
There is no problem if a user is on windows XP with office XP or even a
windows XP with office 97. the problem only seems to appear on win98 office
97 machines.
I have tried removing the AV of the windows 98 machines with no joy.
The user can save the file locally to C drive and then copy the file using
windows explorer to network location but not save from excel.

This is a very wired fault, any help would be great.. Bring back NT4 :-) LOL

There are two Service Packs for Office 97.

Are they installed?

If not, download them from Microsoft's site.
