out. Does anybody have one or can point me to someplace that might have
one?

All you will need after the install of the system
is the drivers for the hardware of that particular Sony PC.

And that is the crux of the problem as stated in my original post.

But there's a happy end to this story which I'll post separately.

you can get the PC to work.
Any Windows system CD will work on just about any
machine. All you will need after the install of the system

Thanks, but that's the Sony VAIO support site and I've
already been there.
They don't show a Recovery CD, which is what prompted my
phone call to them
only to have them tell me "it's not available anymore".

Thanks to all who posted. I've got the PC running with all the drivers and
the customer is happy.

The turning point was when I found an old, obscure post where someone was
selling the exact same model. The "for sale" post listed all the hardware
in the PC (even the onboard stuff). Using that list, I was able to locate
all the needed drivers.
