Antispyware, virus protection and other alike programs
SUPERAntiSpyware does not support Windows 98/ME anymore either in regards to
program updates; only definitions. Are there any types of these applications remaining FULLY compatible for Windows ME? TIA! SGB |

Only one I know of, is HiJackThis.
In some respects, it's still very good - but it's not been updated sufficiently since Trend bought the rights 'many years ago' SilentRunners, I think, still works for Win9x - and is at least still being supported for WinNT. other than that, then you're in practically uncharted waters :( HTH?? -- Noel Paton CrashFixPC Nil Carborundum Illegitemi www.crashfixpc.co.uk "SGB" wrote in message ... It is merely an OS investigative tool. As for HJT, I have a copy of v2.03 (Beta) and have read discussions of feedback and modifications for the next release. And Spybot for that matter seems to be working all right.
For virus protection Avast is still good and probably will be for a while. Harry. "RockyTSquirrel" wrote in message ... FWIW, I took Spybot off this XP machine and now SpywareBlaster keeps
dropping protection for Firefox, which I use 99% of the time. Apparently they are sorta tied together, but I use MBAM instead of Spybot or Adaware (forget how to spell that one, lol). Not sure if you can use MBAM on WinME.....I shall check. But on the other hand, I don't think there is too much malware still around for WinME (VBG). Heather (and no....MBAM won't work on WinME) "RockyTSquirrel" wrote in message ... I still use SpywareBlaster, I guess its working, :-) it updates about every 2 weeks "SGB" wrote in message ... The progress is slow but is actively being worked on. Both programs I quoted are investigative tools - and should be used with caution. I find that in certain circumstances one is better than the other - and vice-versa. However, I find that using either of them is pretty much essential (avoiding direct registry access) in any malware checkup, as dead links are frequently left behind after cleanup, and it's a lot more time-efficient to use either than to trawl the registry and trace links that may lead nowhere. I've not seen any significant changes in HJT since v1.99 except frills - and it's not been out of Beta since v2.00 (March 2007?) AFAIK. WRT Avast - the website only states that Win9x is supported until end '09 - not that it won't be supported after that (although the implication is that it may stop at that point) I notice that in neither of your replies have you assisted the OP - is there any particular reason for that? -- Noel Paton CrashFixPC Nil Carborundum Illegitemi www.crashfixpc.co.uk |
