fixed IP, but get DNS automatically ?? by
Frank
Win 98 SE --
How can I set the IP od a local machine yet still get the DNS server
addresses from from my Linksys router? I can enter the desired IP
(198.161.1.101) and gateway (198.161.1.1), but have no DNS listed by
winipcfg, and no net access.
Everything works fine when I select "get an IP...

98SE update killed my network by
Frank Smith
For a long time I have had a nice simple wireless network with XP Home on
the main box and Win98 on my laptop.
Upgraded to 98SE on the laptop and have lost my local network to the XP box.
Wireless web TCP/IP works fine.
Neither the XP box or the 98SE box can "see" the other computer on...

Changed TCP/IP settings revert after restart by
Frank Van Haste
G'day!
On our P2P n/w, upgraded file server from NT4 to XP Pro.
Had "hard" IP addresses but now want sys to assign dynamic
IP addresses. On IBM Thinkpad running W98 SE, when TCP/IP
changed to allow sys to assign IP address, the laptop
connects just fine but checking TCP/IP properties I find
that...

The win98 boxes are too old to upgrade to xp. I have downloaded and
installed the DS client but still get the message: "no domain server was

TCP/IP gets "lost"... by
Frank[_5_]
One XP home system and one Win98SE laptop.
Frequently on my network the "Neighborhood" no longer exists.
Neither computer can see the shared resources on the other.
IF I remove TCP/IP on the Win98 laptop, Reinstall it.... everything
returns to normal.
Any thoughts,
Frank

Stealth Test by
Fred
At one time there was a web site "Shields Up" that would test your computer
for stealth. This URL does not work now.
Anyone know of another URL or program that can check for stealth ?
Thanks

Win98SE system can't ping / be pinged / explored but shows up in Neighborhood by
Fred Marshall
I am adding a WIN98SE system to a LAN.
The workgroup name is consistent.
The IP addressing is consistent.
I have followed Carey Holzman's rules for configuration after somewhat
simpler settings failed.
This computer sees nothing in the workgroup (it appears) but sees itself on
the network.
It can...

Losing Static IP Address? by
Fred Marshall
I'm seeing some computers on a LAN that are switching from static IP
addresses to automatic. Since there is no DHCP on the network, this is very
disruptive.
Any suggestions what might make this happen? I'd like to prevent it in the
future.
Thanks,
Fred

TCP/IP setting changes by
Fred Marshall
Steve,
Thanks for the reply.
Well, all of the machines have static addresses in 192.168.1.x. Presumably
one does not need a DHCP server with static addresses - two different
things.
So, if just *one* of the machines switches all by itself to APIPA with a 169
address, it isn't on the same...
