Display adapter failes despite being correctly installed. by Lostgallifreyan
Any ideas about this one? What happens is that the manual install appears to work, but on rebooting, the display settings dialog shows and defaults to 16 colour 640*480 VGA. Nothing shifts this, yet according to the driver details in the device manager, it's installed properly. Bootlog.txt also...

http://www.altrichmond.ca ? (!) by Lostgallifreyan
Does anyone here know about this? I was looking for details on the SVGA driver in W98, and one lead turned up SciTech SNAP, (SciTech's name bugged me till I remembered Thanatoid mentioning Display Doctor a wile back). SciTech sold the source code for all their cross-platform drivers, and this...

problem running IE 5 on Win98 ?? by Robert Macy
weird problem with IE 5 running on Win98: one folder has 2,221 emails, during transfer to a local folder, error occurred, tried again, got double copies, and worse, can't now get rid of those 'extra' copies. don't delete, don't move (get an error message), can't even delete one at a time,...

Windows 98 Resource Kit? by Lostgallifreyan
Does anyone know of a downloadable self-contained copy of the Windows 98 Resource Kit complete with any tools, etc, that came as part of it? I think it might have been a CD once, but the pages I'm finding are archived on MS Technet servers and are full of HTML and CSS frills that make reliable...

Hi, I use FireFox V2.0.0.17 on my Win98se computers. I have Java Script enabled, but "Java" unchecked. I did not change, via "Advance", the default "Java Script Settings". "Move or resize exiting Window" and "Disable or replace content..." are enabled (default). NUISANCE: ...

Antidote to knowing too much. :) by Lostgallifreyan
Works for me: In any 'details view' in any Explorer window, click on some file, then hold CTRL and press the + key on the numeric keypad. I can't count the number of times I needed this per DAY, or the number of years I remained in ignorance. :)

FireFox and "Stop Script" Nuisance by [email protected]
Hi 98 Guy, I downloaded version 2.0.0.20 and installed it after I "removed" the earlier version. Thanks for the download link. Changing "10" (sec) to "1" will probably cause more "Stop Script"s to occur due to running out of time quicker if a script is slow in responding. Note: I am...

Mousekeys alternatives? by Lostgallifreyan
My battered optical mouse finally quit (is why I write so much right now, it limits most of the other stuff I'm meant to be doing). I put in MouseKeys but although I like the speed/acceleration/direction control, I hate the bad ways it manages clicks and drags. I found NumPad Mouse which gets...

win98 mass storage driver by philo[_34_]
Lately I've been getting some nice old machines to work on. The one I got today was a donation to the non-profit org. where I do volunteer work. The owner wanted me to get their data off it first. Plugged in my USB stick but it needed a driver that was not found in the cabs. Second Google hit...

looking for utility to convert text files from Mac (& Unix) in abatch process by SlickRCBD[_3_]
I'm looking for something similar to this program called "flip" that will convert the "newline" character in text files, only one that will allow me to use wildcards to convert a bunch of text files in a batch process. I've spent time searching, and found a bunch of Linux commands to do it, but...

LAN Boot, How To Accomplish by [email protected]
Hi, Thanks to everyone who responded. I got hold of a HP Pavilion N3390. Although it doesn't have the same HDD holder, it has the same connector. Using that connector, I am now able to boot up using a spare HDD. I will use a utility to check the CD/DVD drive, etc. on this laptop. ...

LAN Boot, How To Accomplish by [email protected]
Hi, What I would like to be able to do from the other laptop with a NIC, use a bootable floppy that creates a RAM drive on the HP and transfer diagnostic tools to that RAM drive. If I was able to boot from a bootable CD, then I can accomplish that task. I want to perform diagnostics...

Notepad replacements? SMALL ones for big files? by Lostgallifreyan
Hello. Me again.. Does anyone know of a tiny NotePad-alike that UNlike MetaPad does nto force me to either accept a tiny program, and tiny files opened in it, or a bigger version that opens large files but demands several hundreds of kilobytes of RICHED20.DLL? I don't need to open truly...

LAN Boot, How To Accomplish by [email protected]
Hi, I recently was given an HP Pavilion XT155 (similar is ZE4100) laptop with a missing HDD and it's holder/connector. No floppy drive. The CD drive may be faulty because I am unable to boot from a bootable CD (I tried 3 different bootable CDs). The CD drive spins up after a...
