everything I try to open an email attachment that I download it comes out as wordpad and will not let me open it with anything. I have works, wordpad,notepad etc I get the message MSWRD 932.CNV. Someone please help!!

My color settings are stuck on 16 colors, 640 by 480 pixels, when I want it to be 256 colors, 1024 by 768 pixels. I keep changing it, and restarting the computer to see the changes, but when windows returns, it is still in 16 colors, etc. How can I fix this?
