Wiindows Updates -- Part 1, Win98 Gold by
Gary S. Terhune
Several people have asked recently about various Windows Updates. Like how
many have been issued since the Windows Updates Security CD was released,
how many of Win98 Gold's patches were subsumed into Win98SE, etc.
There are two major difficulties in this experiment. First, you can't get...

Angel
I have been getting these emails with "PCSecurityShield" in the from

would like to know also the website from which it is coming. If it is bad

Bootup - Shutdown logger by
PSRumbagh
I would like to produce a (text) file that shows when (date & time) bootup is
completed and when shutdown is initiated. The file needs to append itself
everytime bootup and shutdown occurs, i.e the file grows bigger with time.
For example, over a year period the file will probably have many...

It's beginning increasingly apparent that I will not be about to keep up
with the "deluge" of 98 trials and tribulations for much longer. I first
cut "my teeth" here, and the great part of so many of you originals are
still around--(Don't nobody croak anymore" ;- I do know Alex will be...

Surface scan in Windows 98 warning of bad cluster by
Larry
This morning when I started my Windows 98 Dell Dimension, it began something I hadn't seen before, a surface scan, a very slow process that took 30 to 40 minutes, then it told me it had found one bad cluster (out of the many thousands of clusters on the C drive) that was bad, and so it was moving...

Only getting 16 colors on the monitor. by
disneygeek
I have a Windows 98 system. The computer is a mutt. A friend helped me
out when the power system went, then he got ambitious and loaded in a
bunch of stuff. So I'm really not too certain what all is in here.
Anyway, when we got the computer back, it worked for a while. Then for
some reason, it...

Running IE6 SP1 on Win98 FE connected through 56K dialup modem
Recently, periodically the system pauses for 20 seconds to upwards of
1 minute doing nothing!
Checking connection details, there is no data coming or going.
These pauses are like the CPU is super busy to the extent can't even

How to make em dash an easy quick character by
Larry
I am so tired of having to type Alt+(NUM)0151 whenever I want to type an em
dash in a Windows application such as Outlook Express.
Is there some way I can reconfigure my keyboard to be able to type an em
dash as easily as I type an exclamation mark or a question mark—with a
single key?
This is...

Unofficial Time Zones Update (Testers wanted) by
Gary S. Terhune
OK, I think it's mostly finished. All I need are a few guinea pigs, web page
proofers, etc. The files I am offering work for ALL legacy Windows systems,
95 through 2000 (XP and 2003 are the only ones MS provides updates for, and
the info is already in Vista.)
The only system I haven't tested...

Floppy Disk Question Follow Up by

This is a follow up to 2 previous posts in this newsgroup.
Ok, I confirmed that the FDD ribbon cable red stripe was aligned with pin 1
on the motherboard. I then confirmed it was also aligned correctly at the
FDD. Still got the constant green LED while the FDD spun around like a CD
drive. I then...
